Legend of Dragoon
Legend of Dragoon was Sony’s attempt to knock the Final Fantasy series of its then near untouchable pedestal. The game initially received a mixed critical reception, but has since gone on to become a real cult hit. Too darn right as well as, despite a slightly repetitive combat engine, LoD offered an affecting story with some deep strategy for those who were willing to persevere through a slow opening. It’s a classic RPG that deserves a sequel. Let’s hope one gets made for the next generation of hardware.
Dark Cloud
Why there hasn’t been a new Dark Cloud on PS3 is beyond me. The original, despite its flaws, was a unique and entertaining RPG that graced the early days of the PS2. The games went from strength to strength when Dark Cloud 2 came out, seeing the series’ addictive town building elements merged with time travelling mechanics to make them even more strategic. Dark Cloud was pretty standard in the visual department, but the colourful hand drawn style of Dark Cloud 2 really stood out. The PS4 could do the series wonders in terms of visuals and raw gameplay power. Make it happen Level-5
Klonoa
Klonoa was a pretty brave title now that I think about it. Rather than relying on the cute clichés of other titles in the platform genre, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile unashamedly merged cuddly cartoon characters and worlds with some really dark subject matter. With its simple mechanics and surprisingly emotional story, Klonoa goes down well with gamers of all ages and backgrounds. Klonoa 2 on PS2 proved that the game isn’t just a nostalgic remnant of the early days of 3D gaming, so a Klonoa 3 on PS4 could only turn out in a similarly successful vein.
There are far too many great franchises in the history of the Playstation brand to list them all here, so let us know your personal picks in the comments.
