PS4 firmware update 5.00 released yesterday– and it was a fairly minor update in terms of the new features and enhancements that it brought to the table. Nonetheless, if you tried to update to it, you might have been greeted with an error- E-801809A8.
That error code is supposed to indicate a faulty Blu Ray drive, and is allegedly popping up for a multitude of users who are trying to update their systems, according to a lengthy thread on the official PlayStation forums, as well as one on the PS4 subreddit. Users with faulty hardware flat out seem to be unable to update- trying to do so in Safe Mode doesn’t seem to address the problem either.
This is an issue, because online services, such as the PSN Store, are inaccessible without updating firmware- so these players are left with largely useless consoles as a result. Hopefully Sony pushes out a fix for this problem soon.
