PS5 Pro’s PSSR Surpasses FSR and TSR at Lower Resolutions, Closer to DLSS3 – Albatroz Port Dev

Kyoday co-founder Ivaylo Koralsky also believes the upscaler will play "a significant role in the potential PS6 platform."

PS5 Pro

In the short time it’s been available, the PS5 Pro has done relatively well (at least compared to initial reactions from its reveal). Despite its $699.99 price point, the reception to its performance and how it improves on various PS5 titles has been positive. While there’s been plenty of focus on the bigger releases, how the console is leveraged for ports, like Kyoday’s upcoming project, is intriguing.

Kyoday is responsible for porting Among Giants’ backpacking RPG Albatroz to consoles. Though it didn’t use PSSR for the same, it is leveraging the technology in its next project. Speaking to GamingBolt, co-founder and co-CEO Ivaylo Koralsky said, “For Albatroz, we chose not to use PSSR due to time constraints, and the game already renders at a high resolution on the PS5 Pro.

“However, in another upcoming project with a PS5 Pro update planned, we’re using PSSR, along with ray-traced global illumination, reflections, and ambient occlusion, all while targeting 60FPS in one of the quality modes. PSSR’s superior upscaling surpasses FSR and TSR at lower resolutions, enabling us to add modern techniques for reflections, lighting, and shadows.”

The PS5 Pro also allows for other visual enhancements. Koralsky also compared the performance of PSSR to Nvidia’s DLSS 3. “That project also includes Virtual Shadow Maps for significantly improved shadow quality, which isn’t available on the base PS5. In terms of quality, PSSR is closer to DLSS3 than FSR2, for example. Foliage movement and color shifting are much improved when using PSSR. As we are talking about an AI-based upscaler, its capabilities will continue to evolve and, I believe, play a significant role in the potential PS6 platform.”

The next generation of consoles may be a while, but it should be interesting to see how the PS5 Pro is leveraged for upcoming blockbusters. Check out our feature on the console until then for our thoughts on whether it’s worth picking up.
