It looks like Sony’s investment into building the services infrastructure for the PS4 is paying off. Speaking at Sony’s Investor Relations Day 2017 in Tokyo, Sony Interactive Entertainment Deputy President Tsuyoshi Kodera explained Sony’s strategy to grow the PS4 ecosystem, by investing in network services and infrastructure.
Doing so has twofold benefits for Sony- Sony gets to increase and retain engagement in the PlayStation ecosystem, and Sony also gets further opportunities for monetization and consequent revenue growth. Sony’s plan to invest in the PlayStation eocsystem is to have the PS4 at the center, and the PSVR as an auxiliary vessel for growth, while also adding in other value services such as PlayStation Vue and PlayStation Now, and some services for the Asia specific region, where historically, PSN has performed worst.
And for now? All of Sony’s effort is paying off. PSN has 70 million monthly average users, of which 26.4 million are paying PS Plus subscribers. Hardly a bad place for Sony to be in. It will be interesting to see how Sony continues to grow PSN in the coming years.
