Sea of Thieves Adding Death Tax in Future Update

Dying is about to get a lot more expensive in the coming days.

Rare’s Sea of Thieves doesn’t punish players for dying, except for potentially losing any treasure that might have been left behind at your ship. However, that will change in the coming days as Rare has announced a death tax for a future update. When you die and travel to the Ferry of the Damned, the Captain will charge a “small gold fee”.

The developer has noted that depending on how “avoidable” the death was, the Captain will have more or less patience. Though it didn’t outright say how much dying would cost in those differing circumstances, this leads us to think that dying in more avoidable ways will cost more.

Of course, players aren’t happy at the prospect of a death tax because whenever you die, you respawn close by to the meeting point with Davy Jones. Due to how spawns work in the game, players have already been griefed heavily by this. Throw in a death tax and you’re essentially punishing them even further.

More details are needed at this point but what are your thoughts on the death tax? Let us know in the comments.
