As of this time of writing, Ys Net’s Shenmue 3 has garnered $5,009,304 in funding through Kickstarter via 56,181 backers. This marks another major milestone for the project with less than 55 hours left to go for the crowd-funding campaign.
Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter was announced during Sony’s press conference at E3 2015. This led to some confusion, further fueled by Sony revealing that the game would be subject to its third party development practices. Sony also promised to lend a healthy amount of financial support to the project should it be funded successfully, leaving many to question the point of the Kickstarter in the first place. Regardless, if it was meant to measure interest from the community, then creator Yu Suzuki’s fans have responded strongly enough.
