Konami and developer NeoBards have shown off a new screenshot for upcoming horror game Silent Hill f. Taking to social media platform X, the screenshot was posted alongside the title Otherworld: The Dark Shrine. While not too many details about Silent Hill f have been revealed through this, social media interactions with creative director Al Yang have indicated that the game might be drawing some inspirations from a classic Japanese horror movie.

In a post on X, Yang revealed that one of the goals of NeoBards as it develops Silent Hill f is to offer up its own unique take on the Otherworld that Silent Hill games are known for. Typically, the Otherworld sections of Silent Hill games tend to be some of their scariest parts, often involving grotesque monsters and the world itself changing to take on darker tones.

“One of the big challenges for us on Silent Hill f was to create an interesting Otherworld for our new setting, finding that blend of new and nostalgic,” posted Yang. Responding to another X user about his favourite horror games, Yang also revealed that he is a fan of 1964 Japanese horror classic Kwaidan.

For some context, Kwaidan is an anthology movie that features four distinct stories, each one with its own story, characters, and motifs. The title of the movie is based on the Japanese term kaidan, which roughly translates to “ghost story”. Kwaidan is a critically-acclaimed movie, having won several awards at various film festivals back when it first came out, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

The details being revealed about Silent Hill f, including the fact that it has been getting content ratings from various ratings boards from all over the world, indicate that we might be close to getting a release date for the game. Back in March, Konami had revealed the required hardware to play the PC release of Silent Hill f. Alongside other details, the announcement also revealed that the title will need 50 GB of storage space.

Writer of the game Ryukishi07 has also spoken about his time working on the game, as well as how he originally enjoyed the older Silent Hill titles. He also mentioned that he wouldn’t mind if Silent Hill f ended up being the last thing he ever wrote.

“I’ve poured all my efforts into this story, so much so that I don’t think I would mind if it was the last thing I ever wrote,” said Ryukishi07. “To me, the Silent Hill series is more than just a collection of stories, it’s a medium; an amazing, phenomenal way of exploring and experiencing a person’s heart and mind. It’s my hope that players out there will come to appreciate it in the same way. And to all of our overseas friends, I hope you’ll enjoy a look at what Silent Hill might be like if set somewhere a little different, like Japan.”

Silent Hill f is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
