Yet another year and yet another version of Skyrim. At this point, it’s frankly getting ridiculous as to how many times Bethesda will port Skyrim to a new platform. The game was recently ported to the Nintendo Switch and now it had made its way to the Xbox One X through a 4K patch. Unfortunately, other than the resolution boost there isn’t a lot of PC level improvements in the Xbox One X version.

Last year the Skyrim was also patched for the PS4 Pro and it ran at native 4K resolution. The story is largely similar with the Xbox One X version. Besides the native 4K resolution, the Xbox One X version benefits from improved shadow quality, draw distances, increased foliage density and high resolution textures with better texture filtering. Performance remains stable at 30fps. All of these improvements are already present on the PS4 Pro so there is absolutely nothing to choose between the two versions.

It’s a shame because the Xbox One X could have been supported with a 1080p/60fps option. There is certainly enough power there to deliver that performance benchmark. Overall, it seems that Bethesda wanted to do some quick work with the Xbox One X patch by improving the resolution and adding some visual parameters here and there.

This is why we believe that both Sony and Microsoft should help and possibly invest money into these third party patches. This move will go a long way in ensuring that their respective iterative consoles are being used to their full potential.
