Release Date: February 14, 2017
Sniper Elite 4 is an upcoming third person tactical and stealth shooter game. The game is being developed by Rebellion Developments and is being published by the developer when it comes to the digital version and will be published by Sold Out studios when it comes to the retail version. The title will be coming to the Xbox One, PS4 and the PC in February of 2017 and is the continuation of the series. As the title suggests, this is the fourth installment in the Sniper Elite series. All four games have had the same basic premise, which is the player is a sniper in World War II who is tasked with taking out high value targets in the German army. The game is once again allowing players to take out Adolf Hitler himself.
Development
In March of 2016, Sniper Elite 4 was officially announced by Rebellion. At the time of the announcement the game was said to be launching later in the year, with the Holiday season being the most likely target. The developers also announced the game would be running in its native 1080p on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and said Sniper Elite 4 is the first game in the series that isn’t being built with the constraints that hampered the other games because they were also being built using the older hardware sich as the PS3 and Xbox 360.
About a week after the game was officially announced, the developers said they had reached a deal with Sold Out in order to publish the physical retail copies of the game. Rebellion is going to still be handling publishing the digital version of Sniper Elite 4. In June of 2016, the game was announced to have its release date pushed back. Instead of a late 2016 launch, Sniper Elite 4 was announced to be coming on February 14, 2017.
The development team pointed to another game it was working on, called Battlezone releasing as a launch title for the Playstation VR as the reason Sniper Elite 4 was getting pushed back a bit. The team said because they were a relatively smaller studio, they couldn’t spend time getting both games released in the same basic window and still have two quality games. In July of 2016, Rebellion announced they would be showing off the game’s first demo at the UK games festival known as Insomnia58. The company showed off both Sniper Elite 4 and its PS VR title Battlezone.
In September of 2016, the development team released a new trailer which shows off what will be the game’s first DLC. It is in this DLC that will allow players to go after the infamous Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler. At the same time that they announced this DLC would be included, they announced players could preorder it and have it ready when the game launches. The DLC brings more story to the game but also includes weapons and camo that are not available in the base game.
Story
The story of Sniper Elite 4 is set in the immediate aftermath of Sniper Elite 3. This title continues the series’ World War Two storyline by this time setting the players in several diverse environments that could be found in Italy in 1943 as the war raged on. Players will be taking on the role of the well known character to fans of the series, covert agent and elite marksman Karl Fairburne.
Fairburne is going to be fighting alongside the men and women of the Italian Resistance in order to try and help free their country from Mussolini and rid the country of the Nazi forces that have moved in as an ally of Italy’s Fascist government. There will also be the need for the players to find out and defeat a terrifying new secret weapon the Nazis and their forces have come up with that has the potential to halt the Allied fightback in Europe before it’s even begun.
The story also claims that if his mission fails, the allied forces will be more than set back as there will be no Operation Overlord, no D-Day landings, and no Victory in Europe for the United States, Great Britain and the forces that are attempting to take out the Nazis and their allies.
While taking on Adolf Hitler is not viewed as something that is of the most importance in the base game, there is going to be a DLC piece which will bring a new story to Sniper Elite 4. In this DLC, players set their sights on history’s most notorious tyrant in Hitler, who is going to be spending some time in a forgotten corner of the Mediterranean where a secret Nazi U-boat facility threatens Allied shipping. Fairburne is originally sent in to assassinate the base’s Commander, but he finds his target already dead, executed in person by a shadowy visitor who turns out to be one of history’s greatest monsters.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Sniper Elite 4 has a single player dedicated campaign, but there is also an online mode with has both co-op and PvP multiplayer modes. The maps in this version of the game in the long running series will look quite a bit different than in previous games because of the Italian settings. Users will be able to use Mediterranean coastal towns, as well as massive Nazi mega structures. Other maps will see players finding themselves in forests and mountain monasteries inspired real life structures like the Monte Cassino.
The development team has said that maps in this game are going to be many times the size of those that were featured in Sniper Elite 3. One feature that has been said to be back for this game is the X-Ray view that occurs whenever a player executes a target. This has become a signature of the series.
Characters
The main character in this game is going to be Karl Fairburne. Fairburne is an expert marksman who has been sent in country in order to takeout high value targets. While this sniper is the only playable character, there will be several NPCs who will serve as allies, as well as enemies. A new piece of DLC announced in the fall of 2016 will also introduce Adolf Hiter as a kind of level boss in the new missions.
