Sonic Forces E3 Trailer Showcases Avatar Gameplay, Familiar Villains

And of course, that one new villain.

Much like Sonic Generations, Sega’s Sonic Forces is looking to combine the best of 2D and 3D Sonic into one game. Not only will players be able to play as old-school and new-school Sonic but they can also craft their own custom avatar to take into battle. Check out some of the new gameplay below.

Of course there’s also the fact that major Sonic villains from the past – like Shadow the Hedgehog, Metal Sonic and so on – return along with a new villain this time around. Take it as you will.

Sonic Forces will combine the classic 2D side-scrolling stages with 3D gameplay for an eclectic mix of action. Even some of the old-school boss battles have been revamped to add new challenges, like the Egg Carrier becoming the Egg Dragoon. Still, if this isn’t up your alley, then perhaps Sonic Mania (a proper 2D, sprite-based Sonic game) releasing in August will be.

Meanwhile, Sonic Forces will release this Holiday season for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Switch.
