Sonic Mania Animated Intro is Joyfully Nostalgic

Comic book artist Tyson Hesse makes Sonic (and friends) look good.

Sega’s Sonic Mania is looking pretty good and the fact that hardcore Sonic fan-game makers are working on it is definitely showing with each subsequent gameplay trailer.

However, Sega is no slouch itself when it comes to hyping Sonic up – it released the opening animation for Sonic Mania which has been animated and directed by Tyson Hesse who worked on a number of Sonic The Hedgehog comics for Archie Comics. Check it out below with music from the Hyper Potions.

Unlike the upcoming Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania is an old-school return to the retro 2D platforming of Sonic the Hedgehog. The art-style is sprite-based and many classic stages make a return. Newer ones are also introduced such as the Studiopolis Zone.

Special Stages also make a return and they’re similar in style to Sonic CD’s stages. Tails and Knuckles are also playable but for the most part, this is classic Sonic for the new generation.

Sonic Mania releases on August 15th for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.
