While the theatrical release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is still several months away—on March 19th, 2027—filming for the project has now been wrapped up. Director Jeff Fowler has taken to social media to celebrate the milestone, and has gone as far as to say that it is going to be the best movie of the franchise so far.

“And that’s a wrap on [Sonic the Hedgehog 4]!!! On behalf of this amazing cast/crew, we have filmed the BEST Sonic Movie yet and can’t wait to share,” he wrote.

When it comes to film production, this means that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is now going to go through a rigorous post-production period, which will include editing, special effects, and just about everything else that one can imagine. With filming having wrapped up, we should also start expecting more trailers coming out over the coming months, especially once the primary VFX work is done and the movie hits the editing bay.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 was officially announced back in December 2024, right before the theatrical release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Back in March, more details about some of the new cast members for the film had been revealed, which include Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation) and Ben Kingsley (Gandhi). They will be joining Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), as well as a host of returning actors, including Ben Schwartz, Keanu Reeves, and Jim Carrey.

While we still don’t quite know where the story in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will go, Metal Sonic has been confirmed to be part of the film. This also indicates that we might get to see more elements from Sonic CD making their way onto the big screen.

A report from December 2025 has indicated that Paramount Pictures and Sega are also working together on yet another movie. It is slated to be an “event film”, and will take place in the same universe as the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. While no details about this film have been revealed, the fact that it is being referred to as an “event film” indicates that it might be a much grander outing than the franchise has seen so far.

As you might expect, this report has led to plenty of fan speculation, with some believing that this event film might be a standalone movie about Shadow the Hedgehog, as played by Keanu Reeves. We might also start seeing other characters coming into the story that are closely associated with Shadow, like Rouge the Bat.

The Sonic movies have been quite profitable for Sega and Paramount Pictures. Back in January 2025, the companies had revealed that the franchise had crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. The first movie in the series, Sonic the Hedgehog, along with its sequel, had made $725.2 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, coming out in 2024, made $312 million. The upcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will likely push the box office revenue for the franchise even higher since its release in 2025.
