While Sony’s press conference at E3 2015 was plenty exciting, it appears that Vita fans are out of luck. At the same time the company is looking to putting together a new version of the PS Vita, it doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of big plans for the handheld device. Shuhei Yoshida, Worldwide Studios President, talked to IGN at the games conference and said that he doesn’t believe there are any first party studios working on Vita games.
That doesn’t mean that the Vita isn’t getting 3rd party support. As Yoshida pointed out, “yesterday, Square Enix announced the new World of Final Fantasy. That’s coming on PS Vita as well. And as you know and as I know, there are great games that come out digitally on PS Vita that are typically cross-platform with PS4. Volume is coming out soon and Super Time Force Ultra.”
It appears that Sony’s long term approach is going to be to use the Vita as a handheld version of the PS4 with a couple of third party titles thrown in for good measure. That really isn’t much of a change from the company’s approach that last couple of years.
