One of the worst kinds of DLC practices that we have are pre-order exclusive DLC items for games. While these are unusually inconsequential, it’s still unfair to hold in game items hostage to players paying up for a game before it is even out. Things get even worse when there are retailer exclusive pre-order DLC items, meaning it is impossible for anyone to get all of them (outside of buying multiple copies of the same game).
When Sony announced that Insomniac’s upcoming Spider-Man would also have pre-order DLC costumes, no one batted an eye because, as much as it sucks, it is also the norm now. However, it looks like Sony and Insomniac will be going about this the right way—while there will be costumes you get for pre-ordering the game, you can also unlock them in game. Which is to say, the pre-order bonus is simply you getting to bypass having to unlock the costumes.
Now that’s excellent news, and exactly how you should do something like this. Spider-Man launches on PS4 on September 7.
