I’ve spoken about this before, but western games don’t really do as well in Japan as Japanese games do. On the whole, even the biggest western games don’t hold their own well against even a mid-tier Japanese title on the sales charts. So Spider-Man, which managed to top charts for multiple weeks in the country, was definitely an exception to the rule as far as Japanese video game sales trends go.
Its strong performance ended up meriting it another badge of honor that few western games have ever received— it was the highest selling game in Japan for all of September. Very few, if any, western games have ever been the bestselling game over a month in Japan before. This speaks, yet again, to the global appeal a character like Spider-Man has, coupled with just how inherently good a game Insomniac ended up making. Word of mouth is the only reason for a game to keep selling over a sustained period like Spider-Man did.
Spider-Man is available now exclusively on PS4.
Marvel's Spider-Man was the best selling game in Japan for September, on what was the first time a western developed title top these charts since I started making them.https://t.co/l0jjJdb2wr
