Splatoon has turned into one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises in a rather short period of time, having enjoyed consistent critical and commercial success over recent years. It’s no surprise, then, that the recently-released Splatoon 3 has got off to an excellent start as well. Not only did it sell over 3.45 million units in Japan in its opening three days, as per data provided by the Gfk (via GamesIndustry), it has also debuted on top of the weekly charts for physical game sales in the UK.

Splatoon 3 has managed 9% lower physical launch sales than 2017’s Splatoon 2, though given how digital media has expanded since the latter’s launch, it’s no surprise that new releases are seeing more of their sales coming digitally. Splatoon 3 is the first time a Splatoon title has debuted on top of the UK charts (both previous games entered the top 10 in second place), and has become the Nintendo’s Switch’s 21st biggest opening for a game, trailing behind Splatoon 2 in 20th place.

Meanwhile, another new release featured in the charts is NBA 2K23, which debuts in sixth place, with launch physical sales being 29% lower than last year’s game. NBA 2K23 sees 56% of its boxed sales on PS5, 16% on PS4, 14% on Xbox Series X/S, 9% on Xbox One, and 4% on Nintendo Switch. A couple more new releases, Temtem and Steelrisingfail to break into the top 10, coming in at No. 21 and No. 29.

The Last of Us Part 1, which debuted on top of the charts last week, has fallen down to No. 4. The PS5 remake sees a 66% drop in sales from its debut week.
