Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake

It was announced earlier today that Saber Interactive will be splitting from parent company Embracer Group in a deal worth $247 million, with a number of studios and projects being divvied up between the two companies. The fate of the ever-troubled project Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake was left unknown, though some potential information on it may have emerged since then.

Taking to Twitter in the aftermath of the Saber-Embracer deal’s official announcement, journalist Jason Schreier – who originally broke the story last month – said that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is “going with Saber”.

In its announcement of the deal, Embracer Group also revealed that of the 14 Saber Interactive projects it had retained control of, one was “a previously announced AAA game based on a major license”. As per Schreier, it’s likely that that game is KotoR Remake, especially with two of those 14 projects also being described as “joint projects” with Saber Interactive.

Interestingly, in a recent conference call, Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors was asked about the licensed AAA project in question, and if it would be releasing within the next 12 months. Wingefors said (via VGC), “No, I think that kind of game needs some deep love and respect, so without giving full colour, I think it’s some time left until that is released.”

Later, when asked point-blank whether the project in question was the Star Wars remake, and if it was, which studio was leading its development, Wingefors refused to provide further comment.

When it was officially announced back in 2021, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake was confirmed to be in development at Aspyr Media (which will remain under Embracer Group ownership), though it was reported the following years that after sustained development troubles, Saber Interactive had taken over the project.

Saber Interactive and Embracer Group’s deal also includes an option for the former to acquire Metro developer 4A Games, though licensing and publishing rights for all existing and future Metro titles will be retained by Embracer Group-owned PLAION.
