After delays, an extensive legal battle between Krafton and Unknown Worlds, and whatnot, Subnautica 2 will finally enter early access on May 14th for Xbox Series X/S and PC. A new cinematic trailer is available showcasing a group of underwater explorers being picked off.
Naturally, this leaves only one to flee, narrowly avoiding becoming a meal for a larger predator, and emerging onto the surface. Between the glistening flying fish, they land on some rocky tendrils before gazing up at a mysterious structure.
So what’s going on? Well, due to an “ongoing conflict,” you join Alterra and subsequently depart on CICADA for a chance at a new life. Except, in typical Subnautica fashion, things go wrong, and while survival is paramount, it also seems that “The future of humanity on this world is in your hands.” No pressure, of course.
According to its Steam page, Subnautica 2 will launch with several biomes, various creatures, multiplayer, “some” narrative and a bunch of items to craft. Even more content will arrive with each major update, just like its predecessors, and while Unknown Worlds has a “general idea” for what it wants to add, it also wants to hear feedback from the players.
Subnautica 2 early access will become available at 8 AM PDT on May 14th and retail for $29.99 (with the price increasing after it leaves early access). Still, it’s a one-time purchase, and includes all updates up to 1.0 and “beyond.”
