SNK says the newly established development team will "carry on the storied legacy of our iconic fighting game IPs."

Few things have contributed as much to SNK’s success and enduring legacy as the studio’s many famed fighting game franchises, from Samurai Shodown to Fatal Fury to The King of Fighters. As the next logical step, the company has now announced the establishment of a new internal development studio in the form of KOF Studio, which has been charged with shepherding those franchises forward.

Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the King of Fighters franchise, SNK established KOF Studio to “proudly carry on the 30-year legacy of SNK fighting games while also bringing forth a new revolution”.

Over on the studio’s official website, SNK writes (translation via Gematsu): “KOF Studio will proudly carry on the storied legacy of our iconic fighting game IPs while driving their evolution well into the future.”

For clarity’s sake, this is essentially the company formally renaming an existing development team already in charge of most of its major fighting releases.

As per the website, SNK officially attributes KOF Studio as the developer of The King of Fighters 15, The King of Fighters 14, SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy, and 2019’s Samurai Shodown, as well as the upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves and untitled Samurai Shodown action RPG. The former is due for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PC on April 21.

Whether duelling enemies up-close as a samurai or relying on stealth as a ninja, these titles will fuel your desired fantasy.

If there’s one thing that’s been proven over many decades of gaming, it’s that you can never have enough ninja and samurai games. The cool factor is undeniable, from slicing through hordes of enemies on your lonesome with a katana, engaging in duels to the death, or infiltrating fortresses and assassinating targets with cunning and stealth. Assassin’s Creed Shadows may be the ninja/samurai fantasy that many engage with this November, but plenty of other options exist in the here and now. Check out 14 of our choices here.

Ghostrunner 2

Don’t let the fast-paced motorcycle sections, larger levels or cyberspace fool you – Ghostrunner 2’s Jack is still very much the cyber-ninja bad-ass as in the previous game. Deflecting attacks, slicing through foes, parkouring through neon-lit environments, and one-hit kills are still part of the gameplay loop. The new abilities and rogue-like mode further add to the experience, even if there’s a lot of trial and error involved to progress forward.

"We want to get more and more staff, because we need more people to make these crazy awesome games," says SNK's Joshua Weatherford.

SNK had plenty to talk about at EVO, from showcasing a new fighter for the upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves to unveiling new DLC for The King of Fighters 15 to shadow dropping SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos– though interestingly, there’s plenty more that the company is currently working on as well.

During SNK’s showcase panel at Evo (via Gematsu), producer Joshua Weatherford revealed two more games that SNK is currently working on. One is a new entry in the Art of Fighting franchise, which is set in the same universe as Fatal Fury and hasn’t seen a new instalment since 1996. The second project, meanwhile, is an action RPG spinoff in the fighting franchise Samurai Shodown, which, as per Weatherford, is going to “have a lot surprises in store”.

Weatherford says SNK is actively recruiting to work on both projects, so it’s probably safe to assume that they’re in the early stages of development right now. Presumably, that means it’ll be a while before we hear or see anything concrete related to either of them.

“If you’re a fan of these franchises and you’re looking for an in-development job, send in your applications, we need more people to help us make these awesome games,” he said.

Multiplayer in Samurai Shodown now has rollback netcode on most platforms, with only Xbox One and Nintendo Switch falling behind.

Developer and publisher SNK has announced that Samurai Shodown now has rollback netcode on PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and the Epic Games Store version of the PC release. This is a major improvement to how the game’s multiplayer works, since rather than slowing the gameplay down because of lag in a delay-based system, rollback netcode instead keeps the game’s action flowing with built-in predictive compensation for high latency.

Rollback netcode for Samurai Shodown had been in the works for quite some time, with the PC version of the game getting a beta to test the netcode out in 2023. While the Steam version of Samurai Shodown has been running on rollback netcode since last year, some of the console versions of the game, as well as the Epic Games Store version on PC, are now finally at parity with that same version.

It is worth noting that the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One versions of the game still don’t have rollback netcode, and SNK has not revealed whether these platforms will be getting the rollback netcode update at all.

Samurai Shodown is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Now would be a decent time to check the game out since the release of rollback netcode on most platforms will likely help boost the game’s player base. For more details on the fighting game, check out our review.

The beta will begin at 5 PM PDT for those who own the game and continue until there's an "improvement in quality", per SNK.

SNK’s Samurai Shodown has seen its share of ups and downs with rollback netcode. Slated for release in Spring, it was delayed to late Summer and again to an unannounced date due to “various setbacks and extenuating circumstances.” However, the publisher and partner Code Mystics outlined their commitment to providing a more “seamless” online experience for players.

This meant another beta for the community, and thankfully, it’s coming this week. The Final Community Beta Test starts October 12th at 5 PM PDT on Steam and will continue until an “improvement in quality” has been confirmed. Regardless, if you’re looking to jump back into the game, it may be worthwhile if it includes all the DLC characters like the previous betas.

Samurai Shodown is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. Check out our review for the base game here. Unfortunately, the rollback netcode update won’t be available for Nintendo Switch players when it eventually goes live.

The delay is due to “various setbacks and extenuating circumstances." However, a second community beta is coming this month.

Remember that rollback netcode update for SNK’s Samurai Shodown, which had an open beta last February on Steam? Planned to go live for almost all platforms in Spring, it’s been delayed to late Summer due to “various setbacks and extenuating circumstances during development and in light of our ongoing efforts to further enhance the player experience.”

However, the first community beta did provide “great insight” into what had to be improved, so there’s that. SNK apologized for the delay and assured that its partners, Code Mystics, are “fully committed to delivering a more seamless online battle experience, and we truly appreciate your understanding and patience throughout this process.”

In the meantime, a second community beta is taking place on Steam this month. There will be more details “as soon as they become available,” so stay tuned in the coming weeks.

Samurai Shodown is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch, and is the first mainline title in the series since 2010’s Samurai Shodown Sen. Sadly, rollback netcode won’t be available for the Switch version when it goes live. Check out our official review for more details on the game, which has received several DLC characters like Baiken from Guilty Gear.

PC players who own the game on Steam can participate in the beta, which includes the base game's roster and all DLC characters.

Originally meant to begin this month, SNK’s rollback open beta for Samurai Shodown will run from February 10th to 17th (JST) on PC via Steam. All characters, including DLC fighters, are playable, and all game owners are eligible to participate.

Rollback netcode will be coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PC players (via Steam and the Epic Games Store) in the future. The weapons-based fighter launched in June 2019 for PS4 and Xbox One and made its way to Stadia in November and Nintendo Switch in December. It would eventually arrive for PC in 2020 on the Epic Games Store but wouldn’t become available on Steam until a year later.

You can check out our review of the game here. It’s received several new characters via DLC over the years, including guest characters like Baiken from Guilty Gear and Hibiki Takane from The Last Blade 2.

Along with announcing Season 2 of The King of Fighters 15, SNK confirmed that Samurai Shodown would have an open beta test for rollback netcode in January 2023. It will be available for PC via Steam but is also coming to the Epic Games Store, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One versions.

The Nintendo Switch wasn’t mentioned, so it may be excluded from rollback netcode support. As for Google Stadia, the service is shutting down on January 18th, 2023, with all products to be refunded. It makes sense then to drop support for the same.

Samurai Shodown was first launched in June 2019 and has seen several updates and DLC characters. Along with previous entries’ characters returning, like Cham Cham, Kazuki Kazama, and Rimururu, it’s had guest characters from other series like Warden (For Honor), Gongsun Li (Honor of Kings), Hibiki Takane (The Last Blade 2), and Baiken (Guilty Gear). Stay tuned for more details on further updates in the coming months.
