Sega is working on a direct sequel to the 2022 3D platformer Sonic Frontiers, it's been claimed, though it may not necessarily be called Sonic Frontiers 2.

Since before Sonic Frontiers even launched, Sega made it abundantly clear that future instalments in the franchise would be building on the foundations laid down by the open world platformer, and with Frontiers having sold as well as it did, it’s safe to assume that the company is probably sticking to those plans. In fact, a direct sequel to Sonic Frontiers seems to be in development.

That’s as per known leaker Daniel Richtman, who has claimed that Sonic Frontiers 2 is in the works. Meanwhile, prominent Sega leaker Midori has also corroborated the leak, though she adds that while the title is a sequel to Sonic Frontiers in terms of its gameplay style and structure, it may not necessarily end up being called Sonic Frontiers 2. The original Frontiers, for instance, was called Sonic Rangers until pretty close to its official announcement.

When Sega might officially announce this remains to be seen, especially with the company having no shortage of Sonic-related releases in the pipeline as it is. Sonic X Shadow Generations is due out sometime this Fall, while the film Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (which will star Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog) is set to release this December.

A leaked document claims that Sega will launch another new mainline Sonic game in 2024, along with DLC was Sonic Superstars.

Sega has kept up a steady stream of new Sonic content over the last couple of years, and as many might be expecting, it seems like the company has plans to keep that going with plenty more for fans of the IP to look forward to in the coming year.

An alleged internal Sega document detailing the company’s plans for Sonic releases in 2024 were recently shared on Reddit (via @DPlexHD on Twitter) before promptly being deleted. As per these documents, not only is Sega planning to release DLC for upcoming 2D sidescroller Sonic Superstars sometime next year, it also intends to release another new mainline Sonic title in 2024. Apparently its full release will also be preceded by the launch of a prologue episode of some sort.

2024 will apparently also see the release of the third season of Netflix’s animated series Sonic Prime, as well as the Knuckles TV show, with Idris Elba reprising his role as the titular protagonist. Both of these shows are planned for Q1 of 2024, as per the document, in addition to the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie in December, and a new Sonic mobile game sometime in Spring.

2022 saw the launch of new open world 3D platformer Sonic Frontiers, which has also continued to receive post-launch content in the months since its release, so fans of the Sega property have clearly had no shortage of new content to dive into of late. If Sega’s plans for the next 12 months or so of Sonic do indeed look as packed as this alleged leaked document suggests, it should be interesting to see when the company chooses to officially announce these details.

Earlier this year, Sega also said it was “considering reboots and remakes” as far as future Sonic releases were concerned.

In the meantime, Sonic Superstars is due out imminently, on October 17, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Read our review of the 2D platformer through here.

"Sonic is Sega’s flagship IP, and we are considering reboots and remakes for it in parallel with new titles," says Sega president and COO Yukio Sugino.

Sonic the Hedgehog might be an IP that sees its fair share of ups and downs, but it also remains Sega’s most important property. The company has recently adopted a strategy of implementing new ideas as it looks to expand it further, from last year’s Sonic Frontiers being the series’ first open world game to the upcoming 2D platformer Sonic Superstars being the first to feature co-op- though it seems the company is also interested in revisiting the series’ past.

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Sega president and COO Yukio Sugino spoke about the same, stating that though new titles in the franchise are obviously continue to get made, the company is also Sonic “considering reboots and remakes” for the future.

“Of course, we have to do new things, but not all IPs are the same for new releases and reboots,” Sugino said (translation via VGC). “For each IP, we will choose which method is appropriate at this time. Sonic is Sega’s flagship IP, and we are considering reboots and remakes for it in parallel with new titles.”

Of course, Sega is no stranger to releasing remakes, even if it’s an area where we haven’t seen too much of Sonic. The company has released a number of remakes of Yakuza titles, with the most recent being Like a Dragon: Ishin!, which launched earlier this year. Persona 3 Reload, meanwhile, is set to launch in early 2024, while reports have claimed that the company also has reboots of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio in the works.

As for Sonic, while it remains to be seen whether the series will be turning its attention to potential remakes, fans do still have plenty to look forward to in the near future. Sonic Superstars is set to launch sometime this year for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. An official release date hasn’t yet been announced, but retailer listings have pointed to an October release.

Sonic Team's Morio Kishimoto says he is thinking of making the next Sonic game more like Sonic Adventure.

Sonic Frontiers came along a couple of months ago and proved to be the biggest shake-up to the series’ formula in a long time, and even though it’s not a perfect game, it has nonetheless reinvented the series with its open world approach. Sonic Team has said on multiple occasions that it views Frontiers as the template for the franchise for the foreseeable future– but interestingly enough, the next mainline Sonic game might not necessarily be exactly like its predecessor.

That’s as per Morio Kishimoto, director of Sonic Frontiers, who recently said in a reply to a fan on Twitter that he’s considering dropping the boost mechanic for the next Sonic game. Boost has, of course, been a crucial aspect of Sonic games more often than not, but Kishimoto says he wants to make a game that’s more like Sonic Adventure in terms of level design.

That would mean much more intricate levels that encourage players to learn their ins and outs, and to learn their layout and gather momentum to gain speed rather than boosting. That surely is a style of gameplay that fans of the franchise have loved in the past, but it should be interesting to see how the developers incorporate it in an open world game, should they decide to go down that route.

Of course, before that happens, Sonic Frontiers is set to receive plenty of new content over the course of the next few months, with Sega planning on adding new story content, playable characters, modes, and more to the game with multiple DLC drops.

Sonic Frontiers is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Sega announces that the Sonic franchise has collectively surpassed 1.5 billion units in sales and downloads, which also includes downloads for free-to-play titles.

Even though Sonic the Hedgehog has seen its fair share of ups and downs throughout its long history (to say the very least), there’s little doubt in anyone’s mind that it remains one of the biggest properties in video games, and perhaps even entertainment media as a whole. Recently, Sega announced that the franchise has hit a major new milestone.

In its recently-published annual report, the company revealed that across all of its game releases, including mainline titles, spinoffs, mobile releases, and more, the Sonic franchise has surpassed 1.5 billion units in worldwide sales and downloads.

It’s worth noting that this also includes downloads of free-to-play titles on mobile platforms. The mobile market in particular is one where Sonic has seen massive success with a number of free-to-play titles. Either way, it’s a hugely impressive figure nonetheless, and just goes to show how big Sonic is.

The series’ next mainline title, Sonic Frontiers, is out on November 8 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

While the medium has no shortage of great games, there are also some that are just so bad that you wouldn't possibly have the courage or energy to finish them.

Game development is a pretty daunting task. It requires extensive labour and creative prowess over a long period of time. With the number of people in development teams ranging in the hundreds, it’s understandable that there are many moving parts to a game. If one breaks, it could derail the whole project. Sometimes, despite getting all things right on a technical level – things just don’t click. Either way, this results in a bad game, that most likely critics and gamers wouldn’t be willing to spend their time on. There has been no shortage of such games in the medium, and on that note – here are 15 such games that are so bad that you probably didn’t even care to finish them.

Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing

2003’s Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing is regarded as one of the worst games in the history of the medium, with good reason. The Stellar Stone developed title involves players making their way through the US in an effort to get cargo goods delivered within time. In actuality, however, playing it is an exercise in pain as you try to wrestle with the game’s multitude of bugs and other technical inefficiencies that will make you want to throw your controller in the air.

Ian Flynn, whose currently the head writer for IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, is also confirmed to be penning the story.

Sega finally unveiled Sonic Frontiers during The Game Awards 2021, confirming the title’s usage of an open world though it’s being referred to as “open-zone.” Set on the Starfall Islands with deserts, forests and other unique sights, the reveal trailer saw Sonic speeding through the land and seemingly answering a distress call. According to Game Informer, Sonic Team Japan is developing the title while Morio Kishimoto is leading.

Kishimoto is known for directing Sonic Forces, Sonic Lost World and Sonic Colors but was also the lead designer for Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic and the Black Knight. Perhaps more intriguing is that the story is written by Ian Flynn, currently the head writer of IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. Flynn was also formerly the lead writer for Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog series and wrote an episode of Sonic Boom.

Sonic Frontiers is planned to release in Holiday 2022 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. More details are still to come but Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka hopes that it “lays the foundation for the following future Sonic titles” much like Sonic Adventure did.

Sonic will venture through the Starfall Islands to battle new foes on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Sega’s Sonic Frontiers was finally revealed in all of its glory at The Game Awards 2021 and as the rumors suggested, it looks to be set in a massive open world. It releases in Holiday 2022 for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. Check it out below.

Touting “open-zone” freedom, Sonic Frontiers is set on Starfall Islands which features a variety of different biomes from forests to deserts. Points of interest include waterfalls, towers and what seem to be remains of a past civilization (as is to be expected in a Sonic game). Of course, there are some big threats to battle as well along with a disembodied voice that seemingly needs help.

Time will tell if this lays the foundation for the series like Sonic Adventure did but this is definitely a bold new direction. Stay tuned for more details and gameplay in the coming months along with additional announcements and coverage from The Game Awards 2021.

It's been confirmed that the next mainline Sonic game – due out sometime in 2022 – will be unveiled in full at The Game Awards 2021.

With The Game Awards 2021 right around the corner, teases have been coming in thick and fast for the many reveals and announcements we can see at the show. The likes of Steelrising and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be showing up, and Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive will also be making an announcement. Recently, a new Sonic announcement was also teased for the show- and we now know exactly what that’s going to be.

It’s actually going to be two new reveals. The world premier of the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been confirmed for the show, with Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz (who play Dr. Eggman and Sonic himself respectively) being confirmed as presenters. Meanwhile, The Game Awards creator, producer, and host has also confirmed that the next Sonic the Hedgehog game is also going to be fully unveiled.

Sega first confirmed the next mainline Sonic’s development earlier this year in celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary, stating that it would launch sometime in 2022. Leaks since then have suggested that it will be an open world title, while subsequent trademark filings and website domain registrations have suggested that it will be called Sonic Frontiers.

Meanwhile, there’s plenty else to look forward to at The Game Awards as well, by the looks of it. Geoff Keighley is promising four or five Elden Ring-level reveals, and another that has been in the works for two and a half years. The Halo TV series’ first trailer is also going to debut, while leaks have suggested that Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 will show up as well.

After the web domain for Sonic Frontiers was discovered, a series of cheeky Twitter exchanges tease the hedgehog being at the show in some form.

The Game Awards will be airing this week, and as often is the case, there’s lots of anticipation for the show. While it is peppered with awards (hence the name, obviously), the big draw for most people are the reveals. Whether trailers for upcoming known games, or the big surprise announcements and unveilings. We also know something fast will also be at the show.

As fans will know, the Sonic franchise took the year off from a new game for the developer to take some extra time. There’s been lots of rumors about the next game, including it being an open world title, and something of a reinvention for the Sega mascot. A website was discovered that also matched a trademark, looking likely that game will be called Sonic Frontiers. People have speculated that the game could show up at TGA, and it seems via the official Sonic Twitter, that seems to be the case. “Sonic” asked TGA longtime host and founder Geoff Keighley if he had an extra invite to the show. Keighley said he did, prompting Sonic to say that he’d be there.

Whether we’ll see Frontiers unveiled officially at this point or not is anyone’s guess, but at the very least we will see something Sonic related at the show it looks like. The show will air on December 9th.
