After teasing a new Sonic the Hedgehog title for 2022, rumors have indicated it to be an open world title called Sonic Rangers. A recent trademark by Sega, however, could point to it finally being called Sonic Frontiers. The trademark was registered on October 22nd in both English and Japanese.
Various mentions of Sonic Rangers were found in the teaser trailer for the title, not to mention a press release that outright stated its name. At the time, Sega said that the latter was an older press release set erroneously. It’s possible that the Sonic Rangers name was already outdated by that point, even if Sonic Frontiers wasn’t decided upon until later.
As such, Sega did feel that the initial announcement was a “bit premature” but still wanted to confirm that a new title was in development. The shape that was seen in the trailer was noted to be “something symbolic” and that more details would be shared eventually. Given that The Game Awards are in December, could we see a possible announcement there? Time will tell so stay tuned.
