The optimisation process is an element of PC gaming that can either result in your game looking worse than it needs to, or simply not running at all. With Stalker though, it was worth the fiddly process. The game had a visually stimulating day to night cycle that felt like so much more than a graphical gimmick. The realism of the lighting engine furthered the notion that you needed to survive in a living breathing world.
