Remember 11 bit studios’ sci-fi survival title The Alters, where you controlled Jan and his army of, well, other Jans? Its story DLC has finally been revealed as Last Variable arrives on July 13th. Check out the reveal trailer below.
The story follows the Scientist Alter of Jan, who decides to investigate the Oasis, a strange new phenomenon on the first game’s planet. Unlike the base game, you’re not seeding an Engineer, Refiner or Botanist, but a Geologist, Biologist, Physicist and more. And while the original Scientist can enter Cryosleep, the others will continue working, as time changes their outlook and attitudes.
“DLC” is a bit of a misnomer, though. “Expansion” feels more fitting since there’s 20 hours of new content. You’ll still research new tech and explore the planet, terraforming different biomes and unearthing new resources. Be careful, though – you may also trigger environmental disasters like earthquakes. New structures and soil types await, as you eventually try to figure out what the Oasis really is.
The Alters is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, and those who own the Deluxe Edition will receive Last Variable when it releases. For more details on the base game and why it’s worth playing, head here.
