"A lot of people ask how long the game is, and it’s like, how many times are you going to die?" says Striking Distance Studios' Mark James.

It’s no secret that Striking Distance Studios’ The Callisto Protocol has a lot of gruesome deaths, but there’s good news. If you’re brave – or unfortunate – enough to see them all, then you get an Achievement.

Speaking to IGN Japan, CTO Mark James revealed, “We’re working on our Achievements and Trophies at the moment, and we actually have an Achievement in there for seeing all of the deaths. You are gonna die in our game. A lot of people ask how long the game is, and it’s like, how many times are you going to die?”

James also notes that there are variables to the deaths (like whether you attack or are being attacked). Some sections where you may die by accidentally walking into a turbine may need to be repeated, as a result.

As to the reason behind having so many deaths, he said, “It’s become our signature now. We have a signature death at the end of every trailer. We want you to see death not as a punishment but as a time to learn about what you did wrong, and a little bit of tongue-in-cheek entertainment about how you die.

“Each monster has its own way it kills you, and environmental hazards are hazards to you as well as to the enemy. In one of our trailers, he backed into a fan, and when you’re backing away from a monster, you’ve got to be really careful because these hazards can kill you as much as the enemy in front of you.”

As for the number of deaths, James said that the team won’t reveal the exact number right now. “But I think you’ll have to work hard to do it.”

The Callisto Protocol is out on December 2nd for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. Directed by Glen Schofield of Dead Space fame, it’s set in the Black Iron prison colony on Callisto, Jupiter’s moon. Players control prisoner Jacob Lee who looks to escape after an alien invasion, though more is going on than meets the eye.
