The Elder Scrolls 6: How Should Bethesda Game Studios Handle The Weapons System?

Does the system need an overhaul?

Weapons systems are a core, fundamental aspect of any RPG, especially ones that are open worlds. And recently, it is starting to feel like it is one of those few areas where The Elder Scrolls as a franchise is lagging behind a little bit. When you look at games like The Witcher 3Breath of the Wild and Bethesda’s very own Fallout 4, you start realizing that there’s so much more The Elder Scrolls 6 can do with its weapons system- whenever it comes out, that is.

First and foremost comes the most obvious and easiest suggestion- just add more types of weapons. More variety is never a bad thing, and having something like, for instance, throwing knives or throwing axes would add so much to the combat of the game. Similarly, having a deeper and more complex system of individual weapons’ properties based on the material they are mode from – just as an example – would also so many new layers to the gameplay.

Having mentioned Breath of the Wild and The Witcher 3 already, having durability for weapons would be an excellent addition. It would always keep yon on your toes, maintenance of weapons would add another dimension to gameplay, and the hunt for weapons that are more durable or even outright unbreakable would open so many doors, not just in terms of quests and quest design, but also in terms of replay value. Similarly, having a deeper weapons crafting system that sees you using makeshift weapons should you ever need to (thanks to durability, for instance), would also add a great deal of complexity to the game.
