The next free game on the Epic Games Store has not been revealed as usual. Instead, Epic is announcing that the next free title will be a mystery game. Whatever this mystery game is, it will be replacing Mi’pu’mi Games’ The Lion’s Song, which is free on the service until May 20th. The Lion’s Song is “a narrative adventure game. It is steeped in early 20th century history and focuses on a cast of Austrian artists and scientists with each episode taking a closer look at their intimate struggles with creativity and inspiration.”
Epic has been giving away free titles on a weekly basis since the Epic Games Store launched in December of 2018, including 103 games in 2020. Based on US prices, the free games in 2020 alone were collectively worth $2,407. Epic claims it gave away over 749 million titles last year.
Epic has spent tens of millions of dollars to bring free games to the Epic Games Storen but when you make Fortnite, I suppose that’s chump change. The studio also apparently offered Sony $200 million for EGS exclusivity on 4-6 PlayStation games, though what happened after the offer was made is unknown. You can read more about what Epic paid to acquire its free games here. As for what this mystery game is, we’ll just have to wait and see.
