The Last Guardian has been a long time coming- it’s been in development for ten years, and we’ve known about its existence and its impending release for the better part of those ten years. It’s had a long, fractured, winding road to release, fraught with all sorts of issues and controversies- but at long last, we’ll be able to play Fumito Ueda’s latest masterpiece.

Speaking about the game’s development to Eurogamer, and where he wants to go next now that it is done, director Fumito Ueda admitted that he had never imagined that The Last Guardian‘s development would take this long- and that he could only hope his next game wouldn’t.

“Never in my wildest imagination did I think The Last Guardian would take this long,” he said. “Actually, it was a post-mortem point of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus – they took a long time to make as well, so we thought let’s make the next one quicker than we made Ico and Shadow. That was our aim… Whatever I make next, I don’t aim for it to take as long as The Last Guardian. Exactly what I’m going to do next – I have several ideas. Some of them are in the same taste of the three games that I’ve made so far. Some of them are completely different. I’ve got several ideas. But creating a video game is such a difficult thing to do. I’m still waiting for that idea that’s going to be worth overcoming that huge challenge for.”

He does admit that he aimed to have The Last Guardian made quicker, so who knows how much he will be able to live up to his aspiration here? I just hope that the standard and style of his games isn’t diluted. The Last Guardian is due out in December on the PS4.
