The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s $70 Price is Not the Trend Going Forward

"We determine the suggested retail price for any Nintendo product on a case-by-case basis," said Nintendo following the reveal.

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Following its new gameplay trailer, Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was confirmed to cost $70 for its Standard Edition. While this may cause one to believe that all first-party titles on the Nintendo Switch will cost the same, the company denied this.

Responding to Game Informer about the price tag, it said, “We determine the suggested retail price for any Nintendo product on a case-by-case basis.” When asked if this was the trend going forward, Nintendo said, “No,” before repeating the previous statement.

As such, a $70 price for first-party games wouldn’t be exclusive to Nintendo. Sony kicked off the ninth generation of consoles with PS5 first-party titles costing the same. Electronic Arts, Activision, Ubisoft and more recently, Microsoft’s first-party titles for Xbox Series X/S have also adopted the pricing. Time will tell if future Nintendo titles will be priced similarly.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases on May 12th for Nintendo Switch. Check out the Collector’s Edition here, which costs $130 and includes a SteelBook, artbook and IconArt Steel Poster.
