Spectrum Retreat

For the third time in as many weeks, we know what the Epic Game Store’s next free game will be a week before it hits the service. The Epic Game Store’s next free game will be The Spectrum Retreat, a narrative-driven puzzle title from developer Dan Smith and publisher Ripstone. The Spectrum Retreat will be free from July 1st-8th and will replace Sonic Mania and Horizon Chase Turbo, both of which are free on the Epic Games Store until July 1st.

In The Spectrum Retreat, players awake to find themselves guests at the secluded and exclusive Penrose hotel. The Penrose is a peaceful place, but parts of it also feel unsettling and the player may not be free to leave. It’s up to to the player to discover the secrets of the uncanny hotel and how and why they appear to be trapped there.

To do so, the player will have to overcome color-coded puzzles, alter physics, and their own fear at discovering the truth. The Spectrum Retreat released to a fairly positive critical response when it came out on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2018, and it looks intriguing, so it will be interesting to see what a new audience thinks of the game when it becomes widely available.
