Dean Hall, the creator of DayZ, and also a rich man surely, has revealed that the success of the mod has proved there’s money to be made and is a big “fuck you” to people who thought modding wasn’t important.

“What might make me happiest is DayZ is kind of a big “f**k you” to everyone who said modding wasn’t important,” he told PCGamesN at PAX.

He also revealed a conversation on 4chan on why the mod and also one of the best gaming experiences of this gen came from an obscure person and not from a big publisher.

“I read a comment on 4chan of all places,” Dean said “Someone was asking ‘why is it that one of the greatest gaming experiences I’ve ever had came not from a company but from a mod from some obscure person’. The reply was “well maybe it’s because it wasn’t a product of a billion marketing meetings and stuff like that’. Because it was so isolated the idea was allowed to grow as the idea itself.”

That makes sense in a way and the mod received a phenomenal word of mouth which resulted in fantastic sales for Arma 2 as well.

Hall revealed that he wants to work on more games and talked about his future plans as well.

“I have three games that I want to do. I’m probably going to open my own studio, maybe even affiliated with BI (Bohemia Interactive).

“If you look at my interests, I like to make games about things that I’ve done. So DayZ was inspired by my jungle training and stuff like that. I’m really into mountaineering. I want to explore what that could mean for a game.[…] I’m definitely not done with the survival genre, but I’m probably done with zombies for the moment.”
