The Surge 2

Deck13’s The Surge is officially receiving a sequel. The developer announced through the game’s Facebook page that The Surge 2 is in development and will be released in 2019. It’s presumably coming to Xbox One, PS4 and PC like its predecessor.

The Surge belongs to the Souls sub-genre of video games, featuring a combat system dictated by enemy pattern memorization, dodging and managing one’s stamina. Where the game deviates from other such similar titles is in the ability to target specific body parts of enemies and sever them completely. This grants materials and lets players dictate the kind of customization they want.

The game wasn’t perfect though. The difficulty spikes in The Surge along with drab level design and lacking variety to enemies hindered what was ultimately a novel approach. If The Surge 2 manages to address these problems – and judging by the teaser art, it at least gets away from an industrial setting – then it could be a very compelling release.
