4. Final Fantasy IV
Okay, the story might seem cheesy now, and the plot twists might seem predictable by the end, but Final Fantasy IV is still a classic game, and the way all Final Fantasy games should be done these days. The story was very interesting and kept us hooked all the way till the end (where it lost its way), the characters were very likable and some of the most memorable in the series, the villain- Golbez- was a total badass, the gameplay was deep and addictive, and the boss fights were simply awesome. Yes, there have been a hundred remakes of the game (not literally), but each one has been awesome, and each one is worth a buy. The DS version was simply awesome, with great cutscenes, superb voice acting and stunning 3D graphics. And you know what people say- a legend grows with every retelling.
3. Final Fantasy X
Many Final Fantasy purists criticize the game for moving away from the franchise conventions a lot and having bad voice acting. While it does move away from the franchise conventions, and it does have embarrassing voice acting (it was good for its time, but now it just flat out sucks), Final Fantasy X still comes out as a very high quality RPG, and one of the best games for the PlayStation 2. The story of the game was just brilliant, the characters were lovable and memorable, the relationship between Tidus and Yuna was heart warming, the cutscenes were breathtaking, the character progression was brilliant, the gameplay was deep and compelling, the music was worthy of awards… words don’t do justice to just how magnificent Final Fantasy X was.
2. Final Fantasy VII
What can be said about this game that hasn’t already been said? We all know the legacy of this game- it was the first Final Fantasy game on the PSOne, and many people say, it was also the best. Everything about this game was just perfect- the story was amazing, the plot twists curse worthy, the music brilliant, the characters some of the best in any game, the cutscenes breathtaking, the gameplay brilliant and addictive, and last, but not the least, the villain- Sephiroth- was the definition of badass. Many people would say Sephiroth was, and is, the best villain in any game ever, and I agree. Really, it cannot be told just how good Final Fantasy VII is- you have to play it to believe it.
1. Final Fantasy VI
Great story, terrifying villain, brilliant characters, addictive gameplay- Final Fantasy VI was the absolute peak of the JRPG genre, perfecting everything you will see in a game of this kind. Many great, “memorable” JRPGs came and went after Final Fantasy VI, but no other game, not a Final Fantasy, not a Dragon Quest, not a Pokemon, nothing could even hope to match the quality of Final Fantasy VI- the best JRPG ever. Even the best JRPGs at their very best can’t match Final Fantasy VI at its very worst. The thrilling and ominous soundtrack, the unforgettably nightmare inducing villain, the terrifying and rich backdrops, the setting of the world with its plethora of backstory and lore, Final Fantasy VI remains the greatest JRPG ever made, the greatest SNES game, and quite possibly the greatest 2D game ever made. This game is living proof that you don’t need complicated battle systems with pretentious names, HD graphics, an orchestral soundscore and voice acting to make a game good. We just want Final Fantasy to return to its roots.
