7. Leeroy Jenkins – World of Warcraft

Few war cries fill gamers with us much dread and humour as the wail of Leeroy Jenkins. Okay, so it’s not in the game as such, but Leeroy has become such a classic part of World of Warcraft culture that no list of shouts would be complete without him. The humour, idiocy, and sheer disregard for his teammates is the ultimate stereotype in online gaming, and Leeroy’s cynical pastiche of the average gamer is bitingly amusing as a result.

6. Link falling – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Link is a character we can all identify with, thus the reason why he returns time after time in every Zelda game, albeit it in many different ages and worlds. Amongst a variety of dark and dank dungeons, one noise alone pierces the solitude of Link’s adventures: His piercing scream as he falls from a great height. Whether it’s young or old Link, the bellow remains constant.

5. Objection! – Phoenix Wright

Who doesn’t like being right? Sometimes when you really know someone’s in the wrong (and just won’t admit it to boot), being correct isn’t enough. There are times when you really have to rub their noses in it. Nothing satisfies this itch more than shouting “objection” as loudly as you can. Phoenix Wright showed me this satisfying technique and, even on the tinny little DS speakers, the cry of “objection” always hits the spot.

4. Finish Him!

Few phrases bring about such disdain and feelings of self-loathing as when you hear the words “finish him” after getting thrashed by a buddy on Mortal Kombat. If you’re lucky/skilled enough to be on the other end though, the phrase is a kind reminder of just how much ass you kick. Either way it incites the emotions, and often leads to a gory and satisfying fatality.
