Gamer choice has become a growing trend as of late. Letting players choose how their story will progress, and even who survives. While you can play through these tales in a serious manner, trying to get to the end and vanquish the evil, you can also just try and kill everyone. Games like Until Dawn can be played like this. This goes against the very nature of video games, which is why it remains a fun way to replay your favorite games.
