Today is the 22nd anniversary of Pokemon– Nintendo and Game Freak’s popular monster catching RPG franchise began as an unassuming pair of titles that debuted on the original Gameboy on this day back in 1996. The games would go on to become a major success, and Pokemon today is the second highest selling franchise of all time (next to only Nintendo’s own Mario), and has continued to push Nintendo hardware sales with each release (including the now seven years old 3DS!).
To celebrate “Pokemon Day” as it has been branded, it seems like multiple companies have been celebrating the occasion with tweets on Twitter. This includes GameStop, which had a modified image of the classic “Who’s that Pokemon?” game from the Pokemon anime, and Ubisoft, who shared a cheeky warning about avoiding tall grass. Nintendo, of course, has been getting in on the action, too.
A lot of Pokemon players are also expecting a new announcement related to the series, possibly about the upcoming title, that we know to be Switch exclusive, some time today (though there is no indication yet that this will happen). Even if it doesn’t, though- it’s Pokemon day. As good a time as any to celebrate the classic, behemoth franchise that continues chugging along with no signs of stopping more than 20 years since its release.
