7) Unpredictable scenarios: Who needs scripted explosive set pieces when you can create your own? Of course, you can still do that in plenty of games released this gen: Grand Theft Auto 4, Just Cause 2 and the likes. Of course, with the flexibility next-gen consoles may offer, we could even see mods like we see on most PC games, resulting in a lot of unique content.
8) Character models: Realistic character models are possible in an open-world game without the risk of emptying the entire polygon budget. It’s one of the things that brings a lot of realism to the game, and also makes the characters believable. In most open-world games this gen, the NPCs look terrible and hopefully this changes next-gen.
9) Encompassing multiple genres: You could almost mistake the firefight that happened in Watch Dogs’ demo to a third-person shooting game, or the highly detailed cars that people can mistake for a racing game. This is the main advantage that next-gen brings, encompassing multiple genres that doesn’t feel tacked on.
10) Artificial Intelligence: It’s not easy for large crowds to display specific intelligent behavior, due to a lack of hardware power and the developers’ ability to code proper AI. In most open-world games you never see impressive AI, and it mostly devolves into a shooting gallery. This is an area a lot of improvement is possible.
