until dawn remake

The remake of 2015’s Until Dawn is here with all new visuals, cinematography, controls, and post-game endings. The horror adventure game tasks you with playing as one of eight protagonists as they attempt to survive until dawn. While the average playthrough will see most of them die in one gruesome manner or the other, it is possible for all of them to survive to the end. This is a requirement for gaining the ‘They All Live’ gold Trophy, or Achievement.

This Until Dawn Remake guide outlines what actions to perform in order to survive as every character on a chapter by chapter basis.

Joshua’s Therapy Sessions

The new ending in the Until Dawn Remake guarantees that Joshua survives in human form, as opposed to the Wendigo form ending in the original, but requires a specific set of responses in his therapy sessions with Dr. Hill. Finding Hannah’s Scrawled Journal as Sam, and returning with Mike to rescue Josh is the final piece of the puzzle for that particular ‘good’ ending.

Session 1

  • I feel uneasy
  • I’m not sure
  • It’s in the house
  • It’s alive
  • It’s not human

Session 2

  • Men worry me
  • Crowds scare me
  • I fear drowning
  • Snakes scare me
  • Guns are scary
  • Snakes scare me
  • Clowns scare me
  • Gore disgusts me
  • Snakes scare me
  • Gore disgusts me
  • Clowns scare me
  • Gore disgusts me
  • Gore disgusts me

Session 3

  • Yes, I do
  • I value honesty
  • I value charity

Session 4

  • I prefer Sam
  • I prefer Emily
  • I prefer Chris
  • I prefer Jessica
  • I prefer Matt
  • I prefer Ashley
  • I dislike Josh

Session 5

  • No, it’s not
  • Who are you?
  • You’re freaking me out
  • You’re real

The answers proffered in the therapy sessions above will allow for the specific options to appear in:

Session 8

  • They hurt me
  • I’m so sorry

Chapter 1

As Sam, opt to close the bag rather than snoop, when investigating Chris’s backpack with the vibrating phone sticking out of it.

During Chris’s shooting segment, fire at the hanging sack target rather than the live squirrel.

Have Ashley encourage Matt to take a look through the viewpoint binoculars instead of misleading him.

In the snowball fight between Jess and Mike, avoid throwing a snowball at the bird, but heed the onscreen prompt ‘Sometimes doing nothing is the right thing to do’ instead. After a brief wait, the bird will fly away, releasing you from your timed dilemma.

Chapter 2

Back at the lodge, Matt should refrain from attacking Mike during their confrontation over what he saw occur between him and Emily through the binoculars earlier.

Conversely, Matt should provoke Jess later on in her confrontation with Emily, choosing to side with the latter over the former.

When Jess is trapped down below in the mineshaft, have Mike jump down to her aid instead of being standoffish.

Have Sam pick up the baseball bat to her right when in the company of Josh, taking the humorous approach.

Chapter 3

In this extended interaction between Mike and Jess, choose every good approach presented:

  • Do not scare her
  • Comfort the deer
  • Help Jessica
  • Light the fire early

Chapter 4

Beginning in Chapter 4, characters can get eliminated, starting with Jess. As Mike, you will have to successfully beat the QTEs on the difficult route in order to ensure Jess’s ultimate survival:

  • Risk Shortcut
  • Jump Down
  • The duck and hop sequence
  • Jump
  • Risk Slide Down

Collect your lantern, and proceed through the mineshaft. You will know you have been successful if you find Jess in one piece in the mine elevator.

In the dilemma presented to Chris, choose to save Ashley over Josh.

Chapter 5

As Mike explores and stumbles upon the arm contraption, he should avoid playing with it, and simply carry on. When the wolf startles Mike, do nothing rather than instinctively kick him during the timer. Next, attempt to befriend this apex predator by approaching it. Be sure to hold on to Mike’s machete for later, it will come in handy during QTEs.

Matt must disagree with Emily on the subject of the radio, even though they end up going anyway.

Sam should throw the vase at the psycho, then jump, successfully pass the QTE on the stairs, and hide. This will present her with a QTE to reach for the baseball bat from earlier, with which she can defend herself.

Force the door, and latch it properly. Opt to hide this time, and successfully Don’t Move.

Chapter 6

When confronted by the elk herd, Matt must calm Emily, and ignore the timer to keep them both alive. If Matt has already swung at the herd, he will end up over the edge. Surviving this event will require successfully beating every single QTE to climb back up again.

Next, a series of actions by Emily at the Clifftop tower can help keep Matt alive later. Have Emily explore the tower, eventually leading her to an emergency flare gun box. Hand the flare gun over to Matt, assuming that he disagreed on coming here in the first place.

As the tower burns, be supportive and concerned as Matt while Emily dangles off of the edge.

Save Emily both times, presenting Matt with an opportunity to use the flare gun to save himself. Success is the only way for Matt to survive this event.

After the Wendigo jump scare, Ashley needs to pick up the scissors under the catalog for industrial light bulbs when prompted.

Ashley should follow Chris through the heavy door instead of wandering off on her own, in pursuit of what she believes is Sam.

Have Ashley use the scissors from earlier on the Psycho, after he neutralizes Chris.

Finally, Chris can prevent his own death at a later time, by abstaining from shooting anyone in the timed buzzsaw and gun dilemma.

Chapter 7

During Emily’s gauntlet, do not attempt to light the oil on fire.

Chris should opt to disarm Mike, rather than hit Josh.

Chapter 8

Emily must now contend with a series of QTEs both fatal, and non-fatal. You can outright fail the pre-elevator QTEs with no consequence, though success allows you to entirely avoid the Don’t Move segment at the end of the ride.

The next series of QTEs can kill Emily with just two failures. Successfully drop the rocks by yanking on the chain, and tilting the barrels. Once on the conveyor belt, opt to leap off as soon as possible in order to completely avoid more potentially fatal QTEs.

Do not worry about being bitten by the Wendigo. None of the QTEs after this point are fatal.

Chris will be sprinting back to the lodge, so successfully complete his shooting trials. While the explosive props are sensible targets, they can be difficult and dangerous, so shoot the Wendigo itself instead. Sparing Ashley’s life earlier, guarantees Chris’s survival now.

Mike will aim his gun at Emily, but refrain from pulling the trigger as the timer winds down.

Chapter 9

Mike can save Wolfie by not missing more than 2 QTEs, with continued possession of the machete from earlier adding one more opportunity on top of that. Shoot the rattling object to begin.

Run straight ahead when prompted.

Catch the rolling bottle before it hits the ground.

At the end of the gauntlet, roll the metal drum towards the pursuing Wendigos, before detonating it with a shot.

Be sure to barricade the door with the locker at the end of this sequence, to guarantee Wolfie’s survival from the pursuing Wendigo.

Refrain from shooting the drums this time, opting to always target a Wendigo instead.

As Ashley, reassure Chris and do not leave him behind.

On the path ahead, definitely do not investigate what sounds like Jess’s voice. If you do, absolutely do not open the latch to the trapdoor as that will release the Wendigo. This will guarantee Chris’s survival.

Chapter 10

When Sam and Mike are wading through the underground pool of water, have Sam veer away from Mike and to the waterwheel’s left. Pick up and read the last of the clues: the Scrawled Journal, to ensure both possibilities of Josh’s survival.

Sam and Mike will now be able to return to Josh and pull him out of his psychotic delusions. Hannah will still catch up to him, but if the therapy session answers were provided correctly, then he will survive this ordeal in human form.

Reading the Scrawled Journal after providing the wrong answers in the therapy sessions will lead to the slightly worse original ending of Josh transformed into a Wendigo, but is still good enough for the purpose of gaining the ‘They All Live’ gold Trophy.

With Matt and Jess simply hide and never, ever run. As Matt, be sure to save Jess from collapsing, to avoid being both killed by the Wendigo. Hide together and complete the Don’t Move successfully, to guarantee that Matt and Jess both make it to the end.

Once most of the group is together again back at the lodge, Sam’s actions will determine who lives and who dies. Any failures can be mitigated by reverting to a save, which simply returns you to the point where Sam breaks into the lodge.

Follow Mike and the rest of the group. Every single Don’t Move must be a success for the entire group to make it out alive. After the first two, Mike will break the light bulb, and Chris will leave the lodge.

Sam must save Mike, over any and all other choices, thus sparing both Emily and Ashley from death as well. Emily will escape the lodge successfully.

After the next Don’t Move, choose to hide rather than activating the switch. Ashley will sprint out the door alive.

Don’t Move once more, and continue to hide, as Mike leaves.

Don’t Move one final time, and Sam will eventually leave the lodge, triggering the switch on her way out.

That is everything on how to keep every character in Until Dawn Remake alive to the end and earn the ‘They All Live’ gold Trophy.
