Valve has launched a new service today in beta form called Steam Trading Cards.

Here are some details on what users can expect from Steam Trading Cards:

1 – Earn experience points, level up in Steam and obtain extra friend-slots, profile showcases and more

2 – Steam trading cards are earned by playing games that support the service

3 – You can turn sets of cards into badges and trade-able community items.

This service will “allows customers to earn Steam rewards for playing the games they love,” explains Valve.

“Those who participate will receive game-specific trading cards that can be collected to earn rewards such as game badges, profile backgrounds, emoticons, coupons, and more.”

However, the service is only available to a small selection of games including: Defense of the Ancients 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2, Half-Life 2 and Don’t Starve.

Valve says that the service will start to support more games “over the coming months”.
