Xbox Head Says Modular Upgradeable Consoles Seem Like ‘A Stretch’

He's definitely right in this case.

Upgraded, iterative consoles may be a thing at last thanks to Xbox One Scorpio and PS4 Pro, but actual upgradeable consoles, where you swap out components of your machine to keep it current, probably might not happen any time soon- at least, not according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer.

“The idea that users will open up a console and change compute components inside seems like a stretch to me,” he said while responding to a question on Twitter.

Spencer in this case absolutely has the right idea- consoles are all about plug and play gaming, and even though they have grown more sophisticated over the last few years, which has caused some movement away from that ideal, that’s still ultimately their guiding focus. Modular, upgradeable consoles would definitely take away from that.

If you want an upgraded Xbox, your best bet is to wait for the Scorpio, which is due to launch later this year.
