Won't be supporting Xbox 360 games

Marc Whitten, corporate Vice President of Xbox Live told The Verge the Xbox One will not play existing Xbox 360 games.

The reason that the new console won’t support backward compatibility is because of the Xbox One’s new hardware architecture, which is vastly different from the Xbox 360. “The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn’t really work from that perspective,” said Whitten.

Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 does support certain original Xbox games via software emulation.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 is pretty much in the same boat as the new Xbox, however, Sony has stated that they will try to get backward compatibility working for the entire PlayStation catalog via streaming and emulation using the Gaikai technology that was revealed at the PlayStation 4 reveal in late February.

There you have it folks. Those who wondered if you can play your Xbox 360 games on the Xbox one, we all have an answer shortly after the console’s reveal.

Let us know what you think about the backward compatibility in the comments below.
