XCOM: Enemy Unknown is so popular amongst gamers recently because of its unique storytelling style- there is none. The players craft their own stories with the characters they use and the battles they fight in. The game’s new DLC- Slingshot- however, has something else in mind.
The DLC takes you to China and it will tell you its own mini-story within the game with its own character features his own face and unique voice that you cannot customize, and at the end of the DLC, players will be given bonuses and customization options that they can then use in the main game.
“We’re trying to take the concept of the funding council a little further,” lead DLC designer Ananda Gupta explained (via Kotaku). “In XCOM, we’re not heavy-handed with the story. We’re a strategy game, we like the players to sort of dictate that themselves.”
“I’m a huge fan of the emergent narrative aspect of [XCOM],” said lead producer Garth DeAngelis, “but this really gives you more of the designed narrative, and you get a specific character as a result of completing these three missions.”
There will also be a second piece of DLC that offers the same kind of storytelling, but there are no details on that yet.
No release date for Slingshot has been given yet, but it’s coming “soon”.
Stay tuned.
