Yakuza 6 is supposed to be the end of Yakuza– at least, the end of series protagonist Kiryu’s story, which has been the central arc that the games so far have followed. However, that doesn’t mark the end of the franchise in general- in fact, a new game in the franchise is already being developed.
That news comes to us from series general director Toshihiro Nagoshi, who confirmed during the Famitsu Awards 2016 (via Gematsu). He reiterated that Kiryu’s story is done- but there will be more Yakuza games definitely coming in the future. Given the series’ continued success, and its newfound popularity in the west, it’s good to see that Sega has no plans on putting it to rest any time soon.
A new Yakuza game, whenever it does come out, will presumably be on PS4, at the very least. Given that the Yakuza development team expressed interest in putting the series on the Nintendo Switch, too, I imagine there is also a possibility for a game to hit Nintendo’s new platform.
