Occlusion culling technique at its best.

A lot of new technologies were showcased at this year’s GDC. From ray tracing tech to new APIs, the event was the best in years. But if I have to point out one game developer who are pushing video game graphics to an all together different level, then it has to be CDProjekt. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt looks absolutely phenomenal and it wouldn’t have been possible without Umbra 3, a software that specializes in providing occlusion culling solutions to video game developers.

During GDC, Przemyslaw Czatrowski, Engine Programmer at CD Projekt RED and Jasin Bushnaief, Lead Programmer at Umbra Software gave almost an hour long presentation about Umbra 3. You can check out the entire presentation here or see a small snippet above. The video shows how CDProjekt have integrated Umbra 3 into their game engine, RedEngine 3, which has resulted into reduced memory usage and query times.

To know more about Umbra, you can check out our interview with them. Besides The Witcher 3, other games like Destiny and Killzone Shadow Fall have utilized Umbra.

best played on PC… well only played on PC cus the consoles cant render $hit with this game

Way to keep your posts original. This will look amazing on all platforms.

    • Psionicinversion

yeah mainly on PC though cus the consoles really dont have the power to run this at full glory and thats a fact

The developers has already stated they have not had to sacrifice hardly anything on next gen consoles. Remember this is built for next gen and PC only. They do not have to cader to the older consoles. It will look amazing no matter what you play it on. No need to hate in the consoles for no reason.

    • Psionicinversion

im not but when its saying it neds a 780ti which is SUBSTANTIALLY faster than either console to run at max then consoles not going do so good… itll look good ish i reckon you might have some jaggies someat that smaa may heklp sort out but MSAA, no facking chance.

Well we will see. It is not coming till February of next year and a lot can happen till then. Right now commenting on what it looks like is all speculative. I imagine they will show it a lot this E3. It will be a amazing game no matter what you play it on.

Ya we hear that every time but game always looks much worse on consoles . Specially games that are built from ground up for PC like Witcher 2 , Watch Dogs , Witcher 3 etc .

You can’t compare Witcher 2 because it was only in comparison to the XBox 360, NOT the new-gen consoles. Watch_Dogs is confirmed that besides the TXAA, which is an anti-aliasing solution to prevent flickering and crawling of objects and HBAO+ to create better dynamic shadows, new-gen console versions and PC will be the same with the exception of the resolution as well (scalable on PC, 1080p on PS4, not confirmed on XBox One yet). Witcher 3 on new-gen consoles will have minor visual cutbacks. And it’s always a fact that a game LOOKS best on PC. But the console version ALWAYS has MINOR cutbacks. Besides Umbra 3 is an engine solution, so it’s safe to say that we can implement that in PS4 and XBox One since Killzone:SF already uses it. The 780Ti struggles to run it, because PC hasn’t been well-optimized yet, they have enough time to do so. Nonetheless, the game will be awesome in all platforms.

Best played on a $3000 PC, that 99.999999999999999999% can’t afford or don’t want to buy.

Don’t speak of PC as if every one was a high end rig.

I’ll enjoy Witcher 3 on my PC but you know PS4 is going to put in a good showing for $400.

    • Psionicinversion

holy exaggeration batman, quick to the talking $hit mobile!!!
Good showing like infamous with its 3 lod scales and baked backgrounds? 11 million polygons isn’t impressive when the textures are cut down to cr@p

    • Xtreme Derp

Bring it on b*tch my PC is better than yours lol

    • Psionicinversion

im purposely holding out for next year and bought a 280x instead of a 290 last year to have more money to drop on the best single GPU i can get (not titan cus there poor value for money and not worth the price tag) purely for Star Citizen. I should be able to run most well just cut down the MSAA a bit and itll be fine

  • Nespithe

Even if it only looks half as good on the PS4 I’m sure it’ll still look amazing.
