Despite Nintendo’s Resurgence And Microsoft’s Upcoming Xbox One X, It’s Business As Usual For PS4

The success of the Switch and potential success of the Xbox One X is unlikely to impact the PS4 at all.

The highest selling platform of August was the Nintendo Switch in the United States and Japan, continuing Nintendo’s surprising resurgence off of the back of their new hybrid platform. The Switch has taken the world by storm, on the back of a fundamentally appealing concept, a relentless lineup of great games, great marketing, and a surprising amount of third party support. This is the kind of perfect storm that has led the Switch to top sales charts in North America and Japan, and put up a surprisingly stronger than expected performance in Europe too.

On the other end of the console spectrum, after a tepid year with minimal hardware sales, little in the way of mindshare, and a pretty lackluster lineup of exclusive games, Microsoft, too, is priming for a comeback with the Xbox One X, its superpowered iterative upgrade to the original Xbox One, which launches later this year as the most powerful console ever made, neutralizing a significant hardware and multiplatform game performance advantage the PS4 has held since the beginning of this generation.

By all sensible and traditional analyses of trends, one might think that Sony is hemmed in, and might see its formidable lead being chipped away at by two resurgent competitors. However, one would be wrong in this case- this is because, in spite of the Nintendo Switch’s chart topping performance, and the disruptive potential held by the Xbox One X, the PS4 has never been stronger- and it is unlikely to be fazed too much by what either of the other two systems are doing.

"Nintendo is not eating the PS4’s pie- rather, it has brought its own, equally large, pie to the table, and it is simply eating into that. The Switch’s success has expanded the market, by putting two successful ecosystems on the market, neither’s success a detriment to the other."

Let’s first address Nintendo, since they are easier to address in this case. In spite of the fact that the Nintendo Switch has routinely outsold the PS4 worldwide since its launch (and of the fact that its games have scored and sold better than PS4 games as well), the PS4 has had its best year yet in terms of hardware sales, software sales, and software reception so far- indicating, clearly, that the Switch is not competing directly with the PS4 (in fact, it is likely that many Switch owners are PS4 owners, too). This means that Nintendo is not eating the PS4’s pie- rather, it has brought its own, equally large, pie to the table, and it is simply eating into that. The Switch’s success has expanded the market, by putting two successful ecosystems on the market, neither’s success a detriment to the other.

In other words, even as we expect the Switch to continue being a barn bursting success- it is likely to continue selling out and set records, likely to enjoy unprecedented software sales, and likely to attract more third party game support as time goes on- this success will not come at the expense of the PS4, which will continue to be successful on its own terms, without having to worry about Nintendo’s hybrid. In simpler terms, the PS4 and the Switch can and presumably will co-exist on the market.

Which brings us to the Xbox One- unlike the Switch and PS4, which enjoy a complementary relationship, the PS4 and Xbox One enjoy an antagonistic one (in that the success of one comes at the expense of the other’s success). The PS4 has done as well as it has – by Sony’s own admission – by attracting users from the Xbox ecosystem into its fold. And Microsoft hopes the Xbox One X will do well by appealing to the users who picked the PS4 because it was the most powerful console on the market, and because it ran multiplatform games the best out of all available consoles.

"At this point in time, the PS4 is the ‘default’ console for most people- it has four years of association as being the console to own to play multiplatform games."

Regardless, it is extremely unlikely that the Xbox One X will actually disrupt the PS4 to any meaningful degree. This is not because I expect the Xbox One X to not be successful- I do expect it to do well, I expect it to do very well, in fact. I just think that its success will be independent of the continuing success of the PS4, which, at this point, has reached a self sustaining pitch.

At this point in time, the PS4 is the ‘default’ console for most people- it has four years of association as being the console to own to play multiplatform games like Destiny, Star Wars, and Call of Duty (an association Sony hammers home with its relentless marketing exclusivity deals for those games). It also has more owners- which simply means that, at this point, more people are likely to buy a PS4 simply because they want the system their friends already own. This is a phenomenon we have seen countless times before- with the SNES, with the Genesis, with the N64, with the PS2, with the Xbox 360, and now with the PS4. The casual buyer who just wants to play some FIFA or GTA will get a PS4 because their friend owns that too, and they want to play with their friend.

Add to those two factors the PS4’s continuing lineup of high quality exclusives- after a great showing on that front this year, the console is still due to get Gran Turismo Sport, Detroit: Become Human, Spider-Man, Days Gone, Dreams, Death Stranding, and The Last of Us 2, that we know of, in the next year or so- and the system is bound to continue to sell, especially for the more casual gamer who plays a game or two a year, and won’t spend more than a few hundred bucks on a system.

What this means is, while the $500 Xbox One X is likely to be very successful by targeting the high end enthusiast niche, and while the Switch is going to continue to be successful by appealing to everyone with a fundamentally alluring proposition, the PS4 will remain unaffected- its success is self sustaining now, and more importantly, it is self perpetuating.

So we will have three successful systems on the market, instead of just one- as fans of gaming, we should all be happy about what that indicates for the health of the industry.

I own all 3 systems but I am personally on my Switch and Pro more. I have no interest in buying the X when it releases in November

    • Luke Skywalker

nothing wrong with that, but i’m guessing you had a ps4 which you consequently upgraded to a pro, right? because it has the games you want to play at better performance, right? maybe at some point you’ll upgrade your xbo to an xbox.
      i’ll be upgrading day one.

    • DeAndre Haynes

Maybe. If they’re are games I want for the X. I still own the original PS4 in my bedroom and the Pro in the living room. Just because I have 2 kids and a wife and I need a place to play at times

    • Luke Skywalker

I’m sure if you get the Xbox X you’d probably end up buying the multiplatform games there since they’d most likely run better and look better there.
….and 2 kids and still have time to game? Man, hats off to you

    • DeAndre Haynes

Maybe. But, right now those two systems keep me busy. Yeah I find time between them, school and work.

      that’s cool man, you’re a beast.

“In spite of the fact that the Nintendo Switch has routinely outsold the PS4 worldwide since its launch”

No, it hasn’t. It’s gotten some NPD and Media Create wins, but the Switch hasn’t always won in those areas, and it hasn’t “routinely” come out on top worldwide, either.

“(and of the fact that its games have scored and sold better than PS4 games as well)”

One or two games have sold better, and one or two games have rated better. Unfortunately, the Switch doesn’t have the library size to truly make it a fair fight… oh, and there’s the lack of multiplats, which might as well be treated like exclusives when discussing Nintendo consoles.

C’mon, Pramath/chaz, at least try to sound objective.

    • Zettabytes

“It’s gotten some NPD and Media Create wins, but the Switch hasn’t always won in those areas”

In those two charts, since launch, the Switch has been on top the majority of times with a couple of dips to #2.

      Media Crate:
You can look at archived Media Crate figures and see the Switch is usually #1:
      Source: http://gematsu.com/tag/media-create-sales

      Worldwide:
As of January 2017 the PS4 has sold 53.4 million units.
      http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2017/01/05/ps4-sales-reach-53-4-million-uncharted-4-sold-8-7-million-copies-last-year/

As of July 2017 the PS4 reached 60.7 million units.
      http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/06/13/e3-2017-ps4-sales-exceed-60-million-worldwide

So the PS4 sold 7 million in 6 months (1.17 million per month).

The Nintendo Switch sold nearly 4.7 million in 4 months (1.18 million per month).

So it’s hard to say who is selling better worldwide at this point.

Now take into account that the PS4 has a huge install base (so they have the benefit of word of mouth sales), a large library of games and it can be purchased for less than a Switch.

Once the Switch gets a healthy game library and the inevitable price drop hits, then the system will hit it’s stride. I’d argue that in 2017 the Switch has the best exclusive line-up (definitely the most varied).

” which might as well be treated like exclusives when discussing Nintendo consoles”

Since you can get them on XBO and PC it would not equal a PS4 advantage. As for exclusives, the Switch does have the highest rated game so far with Zelda: BotW and I’m confident Super Mario Odyssey will score high as well.

The fact is that both of these systems are completely different and can co-exist. The author clearly says that the Switch will not make a dent on PlayStation 4 sales. So I don’t know why you are accusing him of not being objective.

If anything you seem to be the one showing preference, since the article is actually a positive piece on the PS4 but you got triggered by a couple of negative comments he made.

    • J.j. Barrington

“So it’s hard to say who is selling better worldwide at this point.”

Yet that’s not what the article says, is it?

“it would not equal a PS4 advantage.”

When discussing Nintendo consoles, it is, because those games skip their hardware routinely.

“So I don’t know why you are accusing him of not being objective.”

Research, my friend. You researched everything but the author.

    • Zettabytes

How are those games an advantage for the PS4? They exist on other platforms. So if someone wanted to play BF1, they could do so on a XBO or PC. So it’s not a PS4 advantage.

And why are you telling me to research the author, when you didn’t bring any data to this argument? Just like the author, you just say things and hope people will believe it. If you want people to take you seriously, then share your facts and sources.

Also, if the author is a fanboy, why do you even bother reading his articles?

    • J.j. Barrington

… I’m not sure if you’re understanding this, and I can’t really figure out why.

When comparing the PS4 and Switch- which is what’s going on here- the games that are multiplats on PS4 count as exclusives because they’re NOT on the Switch. This can’t be hard to comprehend, given I specifically said ,”When discussing Nintendo consoles.” The same is true if you’re comparing the XB1 against the Switch: those games may be shared by PS4 and PC, but they count when comparing to the Switch, which DOESN’T have them.

I said to research him because then you have some understanding as to why someone might call the author out. I did NOT call him a fanboy; you did, though.

    • Zettabytes

No matter how you word it, they are not PS4 exclusives. It’s a simple fact.

    • Fweds

Barrington is a big Sony fanboy, he does Not accept ANY comments where the PS4 comes out second best no matter if the facts are right in front of him.

    • J.j. Barrington

Nobody is claiming that they are.

The word “pseudointellectual” comes to mind when I consider your comments.

    • Zettabytes

The word “fanboy” comes to mind when I consider your comments.

    • J.j. Barrington

Odd. Based on what you say around here, you don’t appear to have the knowledge required to recognize a fanboy when you see one.

    • Zettabytes

Fanboys are unable to speak positively about the competition or negatively about their favorite console . The author pretty much says that the PS4 will continue to sell great and that the Switch is also selling really good to the point that it’s outselling the PS4. Whether that solids true for worldwide sales is something I can’t claim. But when it comes to NPD and Media Crate, the Switch is dominating.

      As for you…

I have yet to hear you say anything positive about Microsoft or negative about Sony in your comments. And you make a lot of comments, so that says a lot.

      So it’s obvious who is a fanboy…

    • J.j. Barrington

If you were using your head- and it seems like that’s only half true- then maybe you should consider the articles in which we’ve bumped heads when wondering why the content of my comments is what it is.

But then, you’re somebody who apparently can’t understand that a multiplat for XB1/PS4 might as well be exclusive when comparing games with the Switch.

    • Zettabytes

By all means share an example of where you trashed Sony and praised Microsoft.

      I’ll be waiting…

    • J.j. Barrington

      Do your own research.

    • Zettabytes

      I did.

    • J.j. Barrington

      Sure.

  • LordCancer Kain

i will never switch back to xbox.

    • Jose Arcadio Morales

i switched to ps4 because xbox wasnt available in my country at launch but i hated the controller so much that i switched back as soon as box was available, ps 4 was horrible expierence online and i played mostly bf4

    • LordCancer Kain

i do not think either of these new controllers are very good for various reason, joysticks, batteries, d-pad…battlefield 4 was especially terrible. the end of the series for me and the decline of my interest in online gaming. if microsoft were to make kameo 2, fable 4, perfect dark or jetforce jemini, i would buy them and play them on pc. they have stated they are not interested in a particular kind of customer and will not make games for them. so.

    • Fred Parkins

      I’m kind of the opposite.

Loved bf4. Played insane amount of hours with that game.

But bf1 can not stomach. Even though am huge battlefield fan that game sucks to me.

    • LordCancer Kain

i liked bf3, played about 1115 hours to bf4’s 389. i only played the betas for hardline and bf1. i do not think i will get back into the series.

I have had no problems with the ps online experience since.the early days of the PS3. I have owned all the Xbox’s up until Xbox One as well as all the Playstations and I prefer the PS controller over the Xbox..

    • greatnessIsaLIE

You’ll always be stuck having the second best console.
Which is fine if you have a pc.

    • LifeOnMars

I can’t see anyone with a gaming PC having Xbox for their console because the games will just be inferior versions. It would make more sense for thme to own Switch or Playstation 4 for the new AAA exclusives.

    • greatnessIsaLIE

I can’t see anyone with a top notch pc not being able to afford all of them.
But yes I can see your point if your cash is limited.

Still the Xbox X is better. lol

    • LifeOnMars

By better you mean more powerful than PS4, that’s true but by being released 1 year later and costing £100 more that’s not surprising. That does not give it any more AAA exclusive titles though.

    • LordCancer Kain

people like the kinds of games they like and the reality is that there is only one console for a specific kind of consumer that microsoft has said is unprofitable and will not make games for.

    • Mark

I see it. He’s zoning in on graphics too much. The 1X is 500 beans, plus God of War 4 and SpiderMan’s coming soon….daaayum. Too much to overcome

  • Jeff Mixon

The XboxOneX will absolutely impact the PS4 in a big big way as everyone wants the absolute best gaming experience, and that’s only able to be gotten on the XboxOneX as 99.9% of all AAA 3rd party games will be vastly superior on the XboxOneX as opposed to the PS4 pro, and while the switch might not impact it at all because that’s a smartphone/tablet competitor the XboxOneX though will drastically impact PlayStation as the XboxOneX will lead the way into the next generation of consoles which won’t be coming anytime prior to 2021 at the absolute earliest, and so three solid years of the XboxOneX destroying the PS4 & PS4 pro in nearly 99.9% of all AAA 3rd party games is huge for Microsoft, and those who say the average gamer doesn’t care about power are totally wrong lol it’s all about power it’s all about the new 4K hdr gaming craze that’s hitting, and Microsoft is at the forefront of that experience with the XboxOneX.

  • D Spenc3

Xbox one X will crush everyone. Sorry. But Microsoft treats it’s gamers with respect unlike those slopes over in Nipon. Can’t we just drop 1000 more nukes on that part of the world and get rid f them all

    • Fel Martins

All because a competitor sells more video games than your favorite system?

    • Mark

I know right, that was far from being funny….but, the internet…

  • Mr Xrat

Just like last year when “concerned” journalists “Wh-what can the PS4 do against the Xbone S and the NX!!!” Well, quite easily: keep pushing out great games, building a great ecosystem and providing great value. The Switch complements it well and the Xbone is an irrelevance, so keep pushing on.

Which neatly brings me to Xgimps repeating the same, tired “90% of all games are multiplats!” damage control point, as if that excuses the total dearth of decent games worth caring about that can only be played on an Xbox system, which is the why the system continues to lag so awful behind the PS4 and the Switch.

  • Luke Hardiman

Most folks have known since Spencer announced the Scorpio at E3 16 it would be the most powerful system on the market. Third party titles will look and run better and this is the reason fans say to buy the X and it appears Microsoft believes power will move units as opposed to exclusive software. “Microsoft hopes the Xbox One X will do well by appealing to users who picked up a PS4 because it was the most powerful console on the market, and because it ran multiplatform games the best out of all available consoles.” The thing is I didn’t preorder my PS4 as soon as I could because of power and being the best at playing third party titles never came up. No the reason was simple and it’s the reason I’ve owned each console that I’ve owned and that’s exclusive games. Also I have the Pro and while it may not be native 4K, on my 65 inch HDR 4K Samsung KS9000 the games look amazing! Heck I was playing The Last of Us Remastered last night and it looks even better with the new 1.09 update installed and HZD uses the checkerboard rendering method and I’m telling you my eyes can’t tell the difference. So a system playing games better that I’m super satisfied with how they look on my console will not get me to spend an extra $500. for the X. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest if Assassins Creed Origins runs native on the X because I know it will look beautiful on my Pro but what would get me to open up my wallet would be if there were a handful of new , diverse and exciting titles that could only be found on Microsofts system. As it is I’m more than happy with the Pro and the Switch. I’m covered!

    • J.j. Barrington

People keep talking about the folks that got the console because it was the most powerful… but that just isn’t going to be a large market.

For one, it wasn’t large to begin with. For another, those people likely just bought a Pro last year, and probably won’t see the need for yet another new console. Furthermore, if they bought the original PS4 for the power, they’re probably pretty invested in the PlayStation ecosystem by now, and will likely have most of their friends on PlayStation. There’s also the strong possibility that any gamer who cares that much about power and performance for multiplats will have a capable PC, as well.

The number of gamers who care about power but don’t want a PC, who would abandon their friends to play the multiplats with better resolution, and who wouldn’t mind shelling out for another console to stay ahead is just not large.

  • efnet

While people here and there are scrambling for some sort of justification to not buy, i on the other hand see the x as a system that will give devs some much NEEDED freedom to create some exciting new projects and im all in for it.
