‘Don’t Pre-Order Xbox Scorpio Till We Show You Games Running On It,’ Says Phil Spencer

Pre-order culture, not necessarily for the best.

Pre-order culture has come to the point that people are willing to put money down on games and hardware based on nothing but empty hype and vague promises. So it should come as no surprise that there are many who are eager to already pre-order the Xbox Scorpio, even though as of right now, this system does not tangibly exist, and barely exists intangibly.

But Xbox head Phil Spencer has a surprisingly pro-customer, sympathetic stance on that- he is asking fans to not pre-order the Scorpio until Microsoft has had the chance to show the system off, with games running on it. In other words, Spencer feels that customers should not spend money on something until they know what that something is.

This is a very pro-customer attitude to have, but more than that, it also probably reflects Spencer’s confidence in the product- he is so confident that customers will like the product once he shows it to them, that they will pre-order it then anyway. He doesn’t have to take their money for it now- he would rather take it later.

It’s a smart stance to take, and I hope Scorpio ends up living up to Spencer’s expectations, as well as our own.

That is the most unencouraging sales pitch ever.
“Don’t pre-order our product because we may have been a bit overzealous advertising it’s power and capabilities. Please wait until you see how bady we are handicapped by our commitment to parity with the original Xbox One before purchasing our newest really costly mistake.”

Too bad sony didn’t say that..lol

Michael, you really have to start strengthening your participation in these discussions with more thought provoking responses. I’m not saying to don’t talk to me at all, but I promise to be more considerate in my analysis of the personal goings on in Xboxville without intentionally being insulting to you. Efnet is really helping me to evolve a bit towards my better nature, and now I can help you do the same. But hey, at least you didn’t say “Pony” this time. That just sounds so dumb when you read it.

      XbotVille sounds better

  • Luke Skywalker

It’s a fair point he made.

He is making Sony look like morons…for selling their upscaler pro as a 4k machine with worse frame rates than PS4. This is gonna be funny.

    • crazy_black_man-

Yeah, cause you’ve already seen the Scorpio in action at the last preview event. Oh wait…

    • Code Geass Season3!!

So true and it’s not like you haven’t been spreading false claims of it being under power or not doing this or that when you haven’t even seen it…oh wait. Talk about being a hypocrite.

Paste at least one comment where I used the word “underpowered” in regards to the Scorpio. I have said many times that it should be called the “Xbox Two”, and not be subject to being handicapped by the Xbox One. The thing that stands out to me right now is how much effort is being put into unloading all of the original launch features of the Xbox One in order for it to be made to perform faster,, and I’m thinking THAT has something to do with the Scorpio. Its kinda strange to see the Xbox team completely abandon their vision for the Xbox One in just 3 years time like this. I would be very weary of buying a console from MS right now. They don’t seem to have any freakin idea where they’re going with this.

      Sony is winning the generation.

The Morons are Microsoft back in 2013 selling Kinect and TV as the new gaming and have never recovered to threaten Sony’s lead in any way.

I actually don’t see any sensible point Phil made here, who in their right minds would preorder a console without even at least seeing it confirmed for sale or having concrete specs?, he should just go ahead and make it happen and stop the cringe he is so desperate not to create.

    • crazy_black_man-

Its like he’s using reverse psychology or something subliminal to accidentally talk people into NOT buying his product.

    • Riggybro

      It works like this:

OMG OMG I want to pre-order so bad. I would buy an Xbox washing machine if they made one!

      1. Phil said not to pre-order until I seen it though. Ok I won’t.. I guess..

      2. But Phil’s advice is so pro-consumer it’s like he really cares about me personally. And he doesn’t care about sales or money. It’s all about the “community”. Man, I wish he was my Dad, sometimes.

      3. OMG OMG I trust Phil so much I’m gonna pre-order!

Tempering down the hype. Sensible, and part of a pattern. Wonder if Xgimps will notice.
