In our exclusive interview with David Pollard from Eiconic games we asked him about the controversial start that Microsoft had with its indie publishing stance. At GamesCom, Microsoft announced the ID@Xbox program which allows indies to publish their games with ease compared to before. However David Pollard believes that even though this changes are welcomed, Microsoft seem to lack the passion for indie games.

“I think it’s the open attitude of the guys at Sony that really helped make that decision – they are just so much more approachable.  Over the last year or so we’ve been able to build a great relationship with Sony, whereas Microsoft’s XBLA policy of requiring a publisher with release slots burned us in the past and in Microsoft I just can’t see the passion for indies you get from guys like Sony’s Shahid Ahmed (and even Shuhei Yoshida!).  There are welcome signs this is changing at MS, but at the moment it feels like that might just be a reaction to their recent PR disasters and not a genuine change of stance. Hopefully I’ll be proved wrong though,” he told us.

Given the launch line up that Sony has for the PS4, we also asked him about the notion that indie games can be system sellers as well.

“I definitely think indie games can make a big contribution to how attractive a console is. Personally, I prefer to play games on console rather than PC (mainly due to working in front of a PC all day and needing to get away from it when I’m relaxing!), and there’s a lot of great indie games on PC that I’m really excited to see coming to consoles, and now brand new indie games coming straight to PS4, which is amazing! And I think there is room for both indie games and AAA games on next gen consoles – they are very different beasts after all,” he added.

Eiconic games are currently working on Final Horizon, for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

sound like he sucked a dick. get off your knees man show some dignity

  • Every Xbox One is a dev kit. Every developer has access to servers, cloud, kinect etc. Moves like that aren’t made within a few weeks of a PR mess. This developers an idiot. There has been talk about this stuff for months leading up to the reveal.

Either way, MS is very late to the party. They should have announced Indie Support way before Xbox One’s reveal, instead of Gamescom. In fact they should have done what Sony did and reach out to developers few years prior to next gen launch. Every Xbox One’s a dev kit but how many Indies got their hands on one prior to launch? Well at least they changed it, better late than never right? Hopefully the indie scene will catch up on Xbox One.

there is a lot more to developing on a console than the dev kit/hardware. you need lots of support and people and input from the platform, especially as a relatively strapped indie dev. it’s very much a working relationship/partnership, and thus the people you ultimately interface with are very important to your experience. Like him, I hope he is wrong about the ID program just being a song and dance and not genuine. But his concerns about passion are very important. It’s no different than hiring someone. Why would you hire someone who isn’t passionate about your work?

what do you think of the video rich from review tech put up? LMAO talk about spreading a load of rubbish! 720p resolution due to network problems, what an idiot! he destroyed all the credibility his channel had with that comment alone! secret sources my ASS!! seriously people in your position need to make sure they don’t jump onto the band wagon for view whoring, and instead do research before regurgitating what they read online! its why i respect you dude, but rich just hung himself! seriously wtf is up with the rubbish coming out of his mouth?

He is supposed to be a core gamer, so how could he make a stupid comment like that? my wife even knows graphics has nothing to do with network load. lolololol what a noob!! and he pc games? LMAO

He’s usually pretty reliable, I think he really has sources, I just don’t understand why he’s taking this rubbish seriously. But you’re right, he lost all his cred with that one sentence. He should know better

Actually, Every XB1 will be (not is) a dev kit at some stage in the future. If the Xbox indie push is ‘part of their DNA’ (Microsoft’s words), and been in the works for years. then why is there such a _huge_ discrepancy in the actual numbers of indie games coming to PS4 vis-a-vis XB1? Proof’s in the pudding. Sony’s pro-indie stance is good for XB1-only gamers though – as it’s forcing them to change their approach and get more indies on.

“Might just be…” that was enough for me. If I’m going to fantasize it would be about this dribble.

  • Slay

I like how he dodged the question about indies selling consoles. He knows they can’t. Xbox one is coming to slay all of your favorites this holiday. It’s the only next gen console with AAA exclusives.

  • Daniel Lawson

just STFU already…. why are these indies using their hearts instead of their heads… you’re trying to make money STFU about a possible source of money you nit wits
