Mass Effect Andromeda Running At 1080p And 900p On PS4/Xbox One, Scorpio Dev Kits Not Yet Shipped

Bioware GM Aaryn Flynn offers slight updates.

Posted By | On 03rd, Jan. 2017 Under News

With 2017 upon us, one would expect more information to start trickling in for some of the bigger releases like Bioware’s Mass Effect Andromeda. The release date is still up in the air but we are learning a bit more about the technical side of the game. Sort of.

Over on NeoGAF, Bioware general manager Aaryn Flynn responded to a comment about the game being 900p on PS4 and 720p on Xbox One. He noted that, “Last I checked, we were like other Frostbite games on PS4 and XBox One – 1080p and 900p respectively. All are at 30 fps. PC has uncapped frame rate. I think we’ve even gotten over the 30 fps cap in cutscenes, but I’ll double-check in the next couple of weeks.”

This is the current build though and as the game is further optimized, things could change. Interestingly, industry insider shinobi602 revealed that dev kits for Project Scorpio haven’t even been sent to Bioware yet.

What does that say about Mass Effect Andromeda on Scorpio? We’ll find out over the rest of the year.

I’m nervous. I hope this story is gloomy like the first ME, but I can’t tell yet

    • Gamez Rule

“Dev kits for Project Scorpio haven’t even been sent to Bioware yet” = Not Good. Wonder if MS will hold back Scorpio for longer than we thought?

    • Mark

In BioWare’s words; “We have no current plans for Scorpio”. So who knows. But AMD looks like they’re on track for VEGA gpus

    • Gamez Rule

No current plans? So I wonder, how will games on Scorpio be better than Xbone games if this takes place? Any ideas?

    • Mark

Well he does say “currently”, not “never”. Regardless, ALL games won’t have Scorpio ports. But there’ll be a substantial amount of 2017 releases that’ll support it imo. I’d like to think the big games in fall will have ports. We’ll see

    • Gamez Rule

Wouldn’t the above be classed as a “big game” though. I thought ALL Xbone games would be running better on Scorpio?

“Initially, Microsoft stated that Scorpio wouldn’t have platform exclusives, but that position isn’t as clear-cut as we first thought. All current Xbox One games will work on the upgraded console, but Microsoft isn’t ruling out exclusives”

    • BillyHoWCR

@Gamez Rule – the article only makes a generalized assumption based on the comment that Loftis made about the fact there wouldn’t be framerate difference “because typically the frame rate is determined by the game developer and what’s right for the gameplay mechanic” which clearly places it on developers lap and shows that if developers do already have gameplay mechanic support for a higher frame rate say on a PS4 or PC that it could in fact be done. And linked discussion with Loftis also stated “Loftis says that developers will continue to choose frame rate to fit their gameplay design, and that might not be unlocked or even 60 frames per second.”

Basically all assumptions on what developers might due and little more. There is no full features parity requirement as Loftis has already stated. And the idea of any required parity was being talked only on multiplayer aspect of games… to keep competition leveled. (though I myself see no such issue because PC has for a long time existed with gamers having multiple game configurations for competitive gaming and thrived)

You will not see Scorpio games basically due to the fact there simply won’t be the install base for Scorpio that would drive a game singly for it. Yes, VR games will be made that will require the power of Scorpio and VR headset but I don’t see those games being much different than the shovelware we are getting with VR now. Basically due to them not being able to put as much funds into a AAA project for such little potential return on investment. (though growth in the VR industry could change that many years down the line.) I see VR being little different than Kinect and PS Eye games where they are a fad and little more.

    • Gamez Rule

A good post and a cool read.

From what I understood all Xbone games will work on Scorpio ( good news ) but to not already have dev kits out to popular game makers is a bit of a worry IMO as I would have though “big games” would have been already showing support for Scorpio?

As for VR I agree, as well as PC online gaming comment you made.

    • BillyHoWCR

@Gamez Rule – currently MS appears to have implemented their first tier Developer Dev kit allocations. Those working on titles they are focused on supporting. There will be other tier levels dishing out Dev kits based off of MS decision on needs and development support. Bioware is not as good terms with MS as they were before but surely will hit the mid tier Dev kit allocations in my thoughts on the matter.

You will likely see a lot more info flowing from Devs on Scorpio enhancements and such after E3. And as stated by some Devs who have already gotten a peek at kits it is fairly easy to enhance games with Scorpio spec in mind.

    • Mark

Well they said “currently”, they didn’t say never. Also there are devs already announcing their Scorpio ports. I think ur placing way too much weight on BioWare’s statements. In fact, they didn’t even say it, Shinobi did. So I wouldn’t take that to mean all devs don’t have Scorpio dev kits or some nonsense like that cuz some devs do in fact have one.

    • Mark

Yes ALL Xbox One games will run on Scorpio, but the question is WHICH ONES will take advantage of the system? That’s obviously Microsoft’s job to reveal that later this yr

  • William Ramos

Were still in 30 fps? What is wrong with these developers?

    • Old Skool

Lol, it’s the limitation of the systems not the Devs.
Don’t you think of they could get 60 frames while making the game look nice at the same time on console they would?
They do it on PC but not on console, you know why……cuz they are weaker.
And yes, there is games that have achieved higher frames on console but those games are linear and smalker in scope, this game is not.
I just hope they can squeeze a little bit more out of the PS4PRO.

    • Psionicinversion

yeah pro is 1800p and thats it, power blown out. all gone. ps4 pro done

    • Gamez Rule

As long as the pro does 1080p I’m more than happy. Yes I own a 4K TV but I’ll rather game 1080p with added extras than 4K with no extras any day.

    • Psionicinversion

well youll have to wait and see what they do because in battlefield 1 the pro is exactly the same settings in both modes they just downsample from a higher resolution in the 1080p one

    • Gamez Rule

Frame-rates are also better on pro by up to 50% in Battlefield 1 and the GPU accelerated particles are much higher too. Online is much better too.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoJjOxhcLY0

    • Psionicinversion

Well either way the difference isn’t much. With the frame thing it’ll just mean it sticks at 60. Either way not very good tbh.

You’ll have to hope bioware does stuff differently and boosts gfx settings.

    • LexHazard79

Yeah then it plays Checkers… til it achieves 4K

    • Mark

Not true. Yes the consoles are low end PCs, however, RPGs are designed to make the world look as good as can be. Therefore, those GPU and CPU cycles are gonna push for graphics at top priority, and frame rate next (at 30fps). Bioware could indeed do 60fps on ME, but the world would be less believable. The consoles can do 60 frames but at a cost, as it depends on the genre of the game. Actually u did just state that lol! Sorry

    • theduckofdeath

      What’s wrong with the hardware…?

    • DA-ROOSTER

The PS4 PRO is to weak to run demanding current-gen games at native 4K the Xbox Scorpio will run more current-gen demanding games at native 4K
The Xbox Scorpio is 3X times more powerful than the PS4 PRO

    • Mr Xrat

No exclusives and will still struggle to do 4K on most new games, Kirk.

    • Riggybro

The PS4 Pro is 100% more available in a shop than Scorpio.

    • Psionicinversion

and ps4 pro is 100% less advanced

    • David

3 times more powerful? ps4 pro is 4.2 TFlops, scorpio is 6.. that means scorpio is 42% faster… not 3 times…

Ps4 has a lot more exclusives this year, so im not quite sure if im gonna buy it

    • RetroNostalgic

yah how many times have we heard that this past first 3 years

    • James Fitzgerald

No it wont it will still have the same CPU as the ps4 Pro thats the bottle neck. The Ps4 Pro has plenty of GPU but CPU is garbage.

    • bewareofZ

Last time I checked 6 is only 1.5 times bigger than 4….

    • Tomaterrrx

It’s the spec of the consoles, not the devs. Unless they turn graphics down to low I don’t think it will be 60fps foe these new games.

    • James Fitzgerald

Its the underpowered CPU chosen by Sony and MS. The Jag simply doesnt have enough guts.

  • kee1haul

Plenty of time to work on scorpio. After all it’s just a straight PC conversion.

    • Mr Xrat

      Keep waiting, Mark.

    • kee1haul

Waiting for greatness. Just four friends today arsehole?

    • Mark

      Whatever Rat, u have no proof I’m that guy…cuz I ain’t. Lol

    • LexHazard79

You do realize that the game will still be playable on Scorpio right? All Xbox One games will run on the Scorpio!
Im sure it will be an easy patch.

    • crazy_black_man-

“Playable” but with no enhancements added then what would be the point of upgrading to the Scorpio?

    • Mark

      Rat thinks I’m you lol

  • theduckofdeath

We are way passed the time to but to expect anything beyond the titular scenario (for new games). Scorpio is MS’s opportunity to unshackle themselves (and devs) for a few years, and ease more gracefully into the following generation. As much as they deny it (as to not break any hearts), I feel devs will take full advantage of varying display modes. There is also the VR “loophole” for Scorpio exclusive titles.

    • Mark

Yup. There will be VR “exclusives” on it. The loophole like u said. I wanna see how people react lol

    • James Fitzgerald

With the same jaguar cpu thats in the Ps4P and xbone S they wont be unshackling much.

    • theduckofdeath

I don’t think MS has a choice but to significantly upgrade the CPU as well. They have been preaching “balanced architecture” since the XB1 launched. Possibly Scorpio’s CPU will be based on Summit Ridge.

Bottlenecking a videogame system with another dated CPU wouldn’t make much sense. Their relationship with AMD should be pretty good — further partnership, investment and sharing of technologies could offset cost. Best case, MS gets downclocked 8-core SR for the price of 8-core Jaguar 4 years ago, or at an absorbable premium; Scorpio launches at $400-$500.

    • James Fitzgerald

They cant upgrade the CPU they already stated its using the same 8core jag cpu. Scorpio isnt launching @ 4-500$ either. I keep telling people 600$ will be the minimum price for this machine.

    • theduckofdeath

I haven’t heard any confirmation from MS about what CPU or GPU will be incorporated into Scorpio. Only concrete data is a FLOPS target, launch window, compatibility, and what they will admit to wanting to do with it (4k 1st games, VR).

For $600 USD at retail, they could absolutely do more with the CPU options.

    • James Fitzgerald

Blah blah blah. Scorpio will use the same Cpu as Ps4 Pro and xboneS does, if the Scorpio uses a totally different CPU, GPU, 12 gigs of ram and a 2tb HD then Scorpio is as Ive been saying, its MS giving up on this generation and moving on to the next gen like Nintendo. Scorpio will use an overclocked 8 core Jag probably 3 or 4ghz.

    • Gamez Rule

      Agreed.

  • DA-ROOSTER

I’ll wait for the native 4K Xbox Scorpio version

    • Mr Xrat

You’ll be waiting a long time, Kirk.

    • Jonas

Or you can build a pc with gtx 1080 today and you will be able to play it in native 4k/60fps on the release day (the same for the trilogy)

  • Mr Xrat

Good to see the upgrades aren’t affecting the performance on base systems.

    Meanwhile Xgimps can wait…and wait…and wait…

    • Psionicinversion

thats because the new consoles arent powerful enough to max out the games anyway

    • Vondawcotton

    Interesting headline there.

    • Mark

      Lmao.

  • crazy_black_man-

What? Scorpio is releasing this holiday season and Bioware still hasn’t received a dev kit for it yet? I find this little tidbit of information to be even more interesting than the article as a whole. I will have to find out more about when these devs are expected to receive those dev kits and how much time they will have to get to know the hardware prior to its retail release. There is a story there somewhere as you would think that the final specs were all but finalized by now. Will Scorpio actually release this holiday season? Who really knows. Many were already speculating on a much earlier release this year than the holiday shopping season because of the pressure from the PS4 Pro’s release last year. Despite all the hype and constant tweeting from MS marketing, something doesn’t seem quite right about these devs not having a dev kit by now. We’ll have see how this all plays out, but I would not trust the information coming out of Microsoft’s marketing right now.

    • Old Skool

      Lol, you’re a funny dude.
The ONLY time i ever see you comment on an article is when Microsoft is in the title.
It’s like you surf this site only to find Microsoft articles to crap on cuz i don’t ever see you commenting on any other articles about upcoming games you like or you’re looking forward too.
It’s pretty pathetic cuz you’ve been at it since you’ve called yourself “Doggystyle”.
I don’t even think you like gaming, more like you have a personal vendetta against Microsoft…..

    • crazy_black_man-

You sound like a fan. Thank you for the honorable recognition. Do you ever think that my comments and criticisms could be beneficial to the future of console gaming in any way, or do you just see them as a negative against Microsoft? I only ask because despite what you may think you know about me or my supposed agenda, I have been probably gaming since long before your little naive azzz was even born. What was the first home console you had as a child? A PS2? You don’t even have a clue about the history of gaming son. The next time you address me in a forum such as this, you had better ask for permission to talk to me first, let alone with any of that pre-adolescent bass in your voice. You feel me boy?

    • Mark

I think he’s saying it seems ur biased towards Microsoft because u rarely criticize Sony here. U have to understand how we see that Black. However I ain’t saying don’t call out MS.

    • crazy_black_man-

Well, duh…its pretty damn obvious I’m biased against the Xbox. Whoever heard me deny that in any one comment since I posted my very first one? I’ve always been in the Sony camp. But the thing you guys don’t understand is that any criticisms that Ive leveled against the Xbox in my whole long post history was just criticism. I could care less if you guys criticized Sony everyday for the rest of your lives. I would actually hope that Sony was listening to your criticism and taking in your concerns as a way of improving what you didn’t like about their console or the way they do business, as I would have hoped you guys would expect MS to do the same with MY criticisms. I’ve always said that it is not your jobs to defend MS from public criticism over these things that you all know are actually wrong with their business model and all these stated problems with their console are actually valid. You guys keep forgetting that you are consumers first, and fanboys second, and you should always side with the consumer. There is nothing wrong with complaining about wanting better quality hardware and software. Stop being a bunch of vaginas.

    • Mark

Why are you complaining about a product u have no interest in, and, on a gaming website where there’s little, if any, Microsoft execs watchin?

    • LexHazard79

Then writes a 1000 word essay to justify his trolling.
Im sure hes on Playstation articles asking Sony why ME Andromeda is not running native 4K. Hahaha

    • Mark

And he has no interest in helping to improve the Xbox, c’mon. Even stated he’s “biased toward Microsoft”…..exposed himself

    • Zarbor

Because stupid is what stupid does.

    • crazy_black_man-

You see? That’s where you’re wrong. Its a consumer product, I’m a consumer. I obviously have an interest in it like any other consumer product. This particular product is centered around one of my favorite hobbies/pastimes, so what happens with this product tends to have a great impact on that particular hobby/pastime. I have a vested interest in keeping console gaming from becoming a feeding ground for huge corporations to milk the populace of people who are just getting their first home consoles and don’t know any better. We are all consumers. WE have the power to dictate what these greedy cororations do in the console gaming arena, but sadly people in the Xbox camp are whimps who just let MS just walk all over them for 2 whole console generations. It is finally now that MS is in 2nd place and fighting to stay alive in the console space that they are listening to YOU the consumers for the very first time instead of dictating to you what value you should from their inferior gaming products. Netflix behind a paywall just to sell Xbox Live subscriptions for 8 years on the 360. And even today, their main focus is not on building up their games library, but just to sell more Xbox Live subscriptions. That is their measurement of success. You can’t see that though. You’re blind as a bat. But they can only succeed if they produce a more powerful console than Sony. The ultimate Xbox after all these years. Unfortunately, they forgot about the games in the process of concentrating on that new more powerful Xbox. The games are the true priority for Scorpio to succeed, and there are none coming in holiday 2017 to help boost Scorpio sales. Meanwhile 54 million PS4 consoles are currently out in the wild. MS hasn’t even got a clue.

    • Mark

Please show me the superior sales numbers for PS4 exclusives. Are you high? Yes I’ll accept VGchartz. They do have a rough estimate on hard copies. But don’t worry, I’ve already looked, ur exclusives usually bomb

    • crazy_black_man-

LOL. You are as delusional as Donald Trump. I guess you missed Uncharted 4 reaching the 8 million mark. Why on earth do you think Phil Spencer moneyhatted Tomb Raider in the first damn place? Come on son. This is not working out for you.

    • Mark

Use ur best selling exclusive as evidence…very weak. Halo 5 sold great too. And? Please list these amazing games that everyone on the PS4 bought and is playing….I won’t hold ma breath

    • Mark

So Sony turns down EA Access, as a possible CHOICE to their fans, but I know, for the gamer right?! They now adopt Microsoft’s online policies with paid subs, but hey, Microsoft, DRM, yah. And we’re blind…uggh

    • crazy_black_man-

EA Access? Do you mean the day that you guys started the trend of paying for demos that used to be free? You just proved my point. Perfect for the Xbox business model. Thank God that other publishers haven’t started that crappy trend yet of making us subscribe to pay for demos with a 10 hr time limit. I could care less about EA’s library of old games. I only play EA’s Madden.

    • crazy_black_man-

The better question is what is your vested interest in silencing others complaints? Are you not also a consumer who would want said product to be improved? Would you like to criticize the PS4 or Sony on every PS4 article? No one is stopping you. We are all consumers discussing consumer products. Is every Xbox article only targeting the Xbox fan club or is it still a consumer product to be left open for the general public’s discussion? What is your specific complaint? Im trying my best here to understand.

    • Mark

This isn’t about honest and unbiased debates, that’s my point. U admitted to being biased, so when u post stuff, it comes across as flaming console wars..

    • crazy_black_man-

      And????

    • Mark

Hunh? U call Xbox fans “blind” and “corporate slaves”….do u not fit these descriptions more than they? If u admit to this, then I’ll get the answer I was looking for and keep it moving

    • crazy_black_man-

LOL, you haven’t succeeded once in this argument. You might as well start your engine now and drive off into the sunset. I like you though Mark. Youre a real fun dude to argue with. I would never intend to offend you man. I have to leave for work now though. Catch you later.

    • Mark

So I can prove you admitted to being biased, while at the same time calling others fanboys. I just want u to admit ur a hypocryte and a Sony fanboy so I can let it go lol

    • Mark

Yup. Just think people should show respect even tho it’s just the internet. People take this stuff too serious. Peace

    • Mark

Also, ur prolly the most active person on GamingBolt, so I think it’s YOU who may be on the job. Do u disagree?

    • crazy_black_man-

I used to be very active on Gamingblend, but that site just got BORING. I have to give GamingBolt credit for keeping consistent amount of traffic. I would actually love to work for Sony’s marketing dept, but obviously the Xbox One marketing team is already doing their best to help sell more PS4s. I can’t even begin to compete with them. Hilariousness!

    • Mark

Well ok then, it’s kinda wrong for u to accuse someone of doing this as a job when YOU fit that profile lol

    • crazy_black_man-

No, I said it’s not your job to “defend” against criticism. I don’t care how much to promote the console. I’m talking about silencing the detractors.

    • Mark

I never tried to silence u…nevermind man

    • crazy_black_man-

Its cool Mark. We just have different ways of seeing things. If you ever wanna get spanked in Madden, hit me up.

    • Mark

Well now yeah. But I won 2 local tourneys in South Jersey. The old Maddens in 2001-2005 were nasty! I have my gripes wit it now

    • ShowanW

consoles have been like this for a while though.
sony didnt give devs a ps4pro dev kit until the console was almost on store shelves.

it seems that the norm is to get the dev kit around 6mos or so till release.
until then, they use PC’s with a target specs..

this is something that seems to be the norm since disc based media kicked in.

    • crazy_black_man-

Well, in the case of Bioware, this sounds like an issue for THEM as they have complained publicly about not receiving those kits are currently not planning a Scorpio version of Andromeda, and I’ve already read where other devs aren’t planning Scorpio versions of popular multiplat games.

    • LexHazard79

Wouldn’t work on a Scorpio version be on NDA?

    • crazy_black_man-

Only if there was something to hide, otherwise why would there be an NDA? The final specs for Scorpio should be known already, and the competition has already shown their hand. Why have an NDA on whether or not you are supporting the Scorpio version of your game? Makes no sense unless the final specs are less than what was previously hyped.

These devs are making the point to say in interviews that they have yet to receive any Scorpio dev kits.

    • ShowanW

im not knocking Bioware for wanting a concrete dev kit/spec to work with… but at this point, they can’t be shocked either.

i would want a concrete dev kit/spec to work with too.
dealing the billion different spec of pc has to be headache already… consoles shouldn’t do that too.

  • gamer04

i’ll wait for the scorpio version then. Tons of other games in my backlog i need to get to anyways.

  • crazy_black_man-

I could care less how much Sony hates it, because I certainly hate it. What are you suckers going to subscribe to next? They might as well put a freakin coin slot on the Scorpio. You Xbox guys are some damn gullible fools.

    • Mark

Playstation Now for the win guys! Wow

    • crazy_black_man-

You’re gonna put that vast library of games up against what little EA is offering you guys? Come on now Mark.

    • Mark

Those are all last gen, at an ugly price, on a subpar streaming network that may drop the resolution, and u don’t own most of them….if u like it cool. I think it’s a rip-off

    • crazy_black_man-

But that’s the thing, I said no to that service too. These are just money grabs. I don’t get caught up in all that extra crap.
