Naughty Dog Seems To Be Backing Down From Its Commitment To 60FPS for Uncharted 4

Why make promises you can’t keep?

When Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was originally unveiled at E3 last year, people were stunned- the game looked absolutely amazing, it looked fantastic, and Naughty Dog was promising the world: the trailer, running at 1080p and 60FPS in game engine, was absolutely representative of the final game, they said. That is what the game would look like.

That has, of course, turned out to not be the case- Naughty Dog may be talented, but they are limited by hardware resources, and the PS4, it seems, just cannot handle those kinds of graphics at 1080p and 60FPS. So the first thing we saw was a distinct step down in graphics during Uncharted 4’s PlayStation Experience gameplay demo (though it still looked gorgeous, it has to be said); then, Naughty Dog began to dilly dally about whether or not the final game would be 60FPS. Now, they have come out and all but confirmed that it won’t be.

“[It is] really fucking hard [to get 60FPS for Uncharted 4]. I mean, that’s true for any game. It was really hard on The Last of us Remastered. And that’s a game we have finished. And we know exactly what the end result needs to look like. And here we’re trying to push the boundaries of what this game can look, and do real time cutscenes… And trying to do sixty is really hard,” said Naughty Dog’s Bruce Straley in an interview with Game Informer.

“I don’t know. The objective for us is just to make the best experience. Right now we’re trying to push the look. And then we’ll see where we’re at, and we’ll reassess. We’re constantly making choices throughout production though. What’s gonna make the game feel best, and look its best.”

Personally, I am disappointed- it doesn’t sound like too long ago that Naughty Dog was singing the praises of 60 frames, outright saying they they could ‘not go back to 30FPS;’ technical ambition is all well and good, and everyone should obviously always strive to be the very best, but just maybe, they shouldn’t have openly boasted or made promises that they weren’t sure they could keep?

The tragedy is, a lot of Sony studios seem to be prioritizing resolution over framerate. They have their priorities all wrong.

    I agree.

When did Naughty Dog ever say that the in-game engine was representative of the final game?

    • Mark

      Ok. So why were so many people posting “Yes it’s in-game. Look how Naughty Dog pushed the PS4 in TLOU”. Blah blah blah. U know why they said this;

      1) The PSX demo said “Captured in-engine running on a PS4”
      2) Corrine Yu blew a ton of gas into people on Twitter about that demo not just being cutscene or something

In other words, saying “In engine” and “running on a PS4”, and “that’s an actual level from UC4”, etc., can be considered deceptive. And u create distrust amongst gamers playing around with a straight up pre-rendered cutscene, only to then play with words to lead people to believe it wasn’t. And now they’re backing away from 60fps, to give the game more beauty. Still tho, they should be more careful of what they say, or INSINUATE, because eventually we’ll see the game anyway.

The link about “not going back to 30FPS” was talking about The Last of Us. I don’t remember Naughty Dog promising 60 fps for Uncharted 4, but maybe someone can link where they said this. I recall them saying “targeting 1080p 60 fps.” So far most companies that say targeting, haven’t been successful hitting those numbers.

    • kma99

they were talking about all of their games. They said they could never go back to 30 after playing TLOU at 60. Stop backpedalling

    • jayflow

Yes that means never play TLOU at 30 again. You fanboys sure like to take your shots in this fake console war, lol. Who’s backpedaling? Whether it’s 30 or 60 it doesn’t matter to me, I’ll still play it.

    • kma99

Who are you referring to when you say fanboy? Nothing i said has anything to do with a fanboy that came straight out of their mouth. What it is, you simply picking and choosing what they said and trying to make it seems as if they were only talking about 1 game. So quit being a fanboy and damage controlling what the developer said. This wasn’t about if the game is playable at 30 its about someone putting their foot in their mouth.

    • jayflow

Lol. I own a PS4 and Xbox one and enjoy them both. Looking at your comment history it’s obvious where you lean, so why do you care about what they said?

Regarding Naughty Dogs comments, if they said it then yes they put their foot in their mouth. I’m only going off of what was tweeted by them and the context was TLOU. I have no reason to damage control cause I can care less whether it’s 30 or 60, it’ll still be good. All of their games on PS3 was 30 and no one complained.

    • kma99

Yes they said it. Also what you failed to mention in that same post the guy stated and i quote “60 is the new standard”. He didn’t say just for tlou he simply said 60 was the standard.

    • jayflow

So you took that as meaning all there games from here on out is going to be 60fps? Fair enough. Once again ND never said Uncharted 4 will run 1080p 60fps. If you can show me where they said that then I’ll eat crow.

    • kma99

Good i knew you would say that thats why i want your take on this article. Please inform me on your wisdom
      http://gamerant.com/uncharted-4-frame-rate-resolution-ps4/

    • jayflow

So you link me to a story, that got their story from Eurogamer. You care to read the very first line from Eurogamer’s story? They use the word “aiming”. Enlighten my reading comprehension, please!
      http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-07-21-uncharted-4-is-pushing-for-1080p60-on-playstation-4

    • kma99

What does headlines have to do with the actual conversation? Headlines arr click bait, its the reason you first checked out this post. How else will gamepur make money without click bait.

    • jayflow

I said nothing about the headlines. I just asked you to read the first line in Eurogamer’s story, not the headline. They clearly say ND is aiming for Uncharted 4 to run at 1080p 60 fps. Yes all websites love to do clickbait headlines I know this. Whether it’s against MS, Sony, Nintendo, or PC it is wrong and they should be called out for it, period.

    • kma99

And in the crux of the conversation they say that 60 is the target because of what they achieved with tlou. It’s simple to see that you didn’t even read what was said because i clearly asked for your take on the article but u come back with damage control.

    • jayflow

Once again there is a difference between saying targeting and that it will be, but you keep trying to damage control when you know you’re are completely wrong! Go back to my original statement from 4 days ago and I said “targeting 1080p 60 fps.” if you want to keep on going with this by all means carry on.

    • kma99

Once again you said previously that they didnt even say anything about 60fps on uncharted and that they only said that about tlou. So then i link an article where they mention it and now you come back to say ” they are targeting “. Thats clear damage control. So if they are targeting 60 they sure gave up early sonce the sweet spot is now 30 for “player experience “.

    • jayflow

Listen…clean your eyes, ears whatever you have to do. Its obvious your reading comprehension is very poor. Go back and read my original post from 4 days ago. I said, “I recall ND saying they were targeting 1080p 60fps for Uncharted 4!” So where are you getting that I said they didn’t even mention 60fps? I even link you to the original article for Eurogamer where ND said they were targeting 1080p 60fps. So what are you talking about? Any way who says they’ve given up on hitting 60fps? They said hitting 60fps is hard, they didn’t say it won’t be 60.

    • kma99

Lol i cant hear you are you damage controlling your damage control. I know its sunday and you went to worship your savior Sony Christ but dont try to persuade everyone else to follow you. Lol jay “damage control ” flow

    • jayflow

Yeah I worship Sony Christ but I’m chilling with MS the devil cause I own both and play on both. I must be talking to a teenager, cause you can’t have a decent convo without the childish stuff. But since you want to go there how about Kiss My A$$ 99. Is that what your name stands for kiddo?

    • kma99

I said nothing about Microsoft so why assume they are should be worth mentioning in an article about some developer doing a 180? Oh thats right if i see past bull and i speak on it then im an obvious ms guy lol thats how that works. If i was in here saying the same thing about ms u would be patting me on the back lol.
      http://www.naughtydog.com/site/post/uncharted_4_a_thiefs_end_2014_e3_trailer/

there u go straight from naughty dog site so u can damage control more. Thry even brag about it running in 1080p 60 on thr E3 trailer.

    • jayflow

And yet again you fail! You failed to read exactly what they said in the article:

“We’re targeting 60fps for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and as you can see the visual fidelity for our character models will reach new heights. In fact, thanks to the power of the PS4, right now Drake’s Uncharted 4 model is over double the polygons of Joel from The Last of Us PS3.”

You’re so silly to even understand someone can go back and read your past comment history to determine what you are. How bout locking your comment history so you can hide what you are a little better.

    • kma99

And yet you fail and i keep drawing you in to fail more lol. 60 was the target u clown lol now they say “60 is too hard” but dont worry jayslow understand naughty dog. New slogan is “we wont do 60 if it hurts player experience” lol. Don’t worry naughty dog it hurts jayslow experience so 30 is good enough for his slow brain.

    • jayflow

Lol!!! Everybody sees your fail thats why you’ve gone to the personal insults like a teenage, Justin Bieber clown. It’s obvious I’ve debated you to the mud and now your trying to sling mud at me but your just making yourself look stupid, but by all means keep on keeping on.

    • kma99

No mud slinging. Naughty dog came out swinging, bragging about their achievement no one asked. Go cry to them cause they can’t do what they said they could do. 60 is the next standard was their slogan but here you go giving them a hall pass because of your devotion. Thats sickening to follow behind someone the way you do. Get help.

    • jayflow

Oh now its no mud slinging? I guess you can’t read some of your own post from earlier, or do you have split personalities? Any way not giving them a hall pass like I said if they said Uncharted 4 will be 60 fps I would be calling them out on it. Since they said targeting like I mentioned 4 days ago, I already expected them to more than likely be at 30. From what I said 4 days ago: “Most companies that have said targeting 1080p 60fps haven’t been successful hitting those numbers. So if I need help for saying what I said from the beginning, then so be it. But I really need you to take a reading comprehension class though. Get help.

    • jayflow

Or is it Kiss MS A$$ 99?

    • kma99

Awww aint that sweet lol. Touched a nerve. Need more tears so i can add salt to my popcorn.

    • jayflow

Lol. I like you kid you’re funny. How bout we play some games on our PS4s or Xbox ones sometimes? Or do you even have either?

    • Michael Norris

ND did not promise shit, people took the 60fps to heart and now since ND is going to push the graphics more 60fps is off the table.I was one of the few that said 30fps will be the frame rate UC4 will be running.

  • Ricoh123

    June 2014 – “we’re targeting 60fps”
    Feb 2015 – “it can’t be done”

Dem crazy PS4 fanboys – “Microsofts dam parity clause means Uncharted 4 is stuck at 30fps Grnnnnphh hrrrmpphhh *frothing at the mouth and nosebleeding”

    Everybody else – “…….but it’s an exclusive………?!??”

    Dem crazy fanboys !!

  • TheWayItsMeantToBePlayed

And thus we learn the age old statement of “Don’t promise things you can’t deliver” also applies to videogames.

If only the entire industry would learn.

    • Guest

Sony = lies, overhype and underdeliver.

    • Michael Norris

Says the guest that has no name nice try troll.Have you seen how crappy the next Halo looks??? may as well be running on X360 hardware.

  • TheAdjustmentBureau

    Im really disappointed by this….

  • Mark

I’m cool with 3rd person shooters running 30fps, but Sony and Naughty Dog need to fall back gasing everyone up with careful wording and pre-rendered cutscenes. UC4 looks good tho

  • bgm0

So why not lock it at 50hz vsync. All modern displays and HDMI support it, also it gives extra 4ms of gpu time. Then my question would be consoles use “reduced blanking” modes?
