Up from 50 million sold as of December 6th.

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai announced during the company’s presentation at CES 2017 that the PlayStation 4’s sales have crossed 53.4 million units worldwide.

It was also noted that the console sold 6.2 million units between November 21st to January 1st with software sales during this period passing 50.4 million units. With 50 million consoles reported sold worldwide on December 6th, the holiday season offered quite the strong increase for the PS4 heading into the New Year.

Though PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro sales were likely included with the overall worldwide figure, Sony hasn’t revealed how much they contributed to the total. And though Hirai noted at CES 2017 that PlayStation VR was selling well, actual sales figures weren’t provided. There are still plenty of VR titles inbound so the headset is far from dead.

more then Xbox fans dancing in joy with Sony’s success perhaps

I think xbox fans would just enjoy their new console and buy a ton of games that they skipped or didn’t want to play because of performance issues.

“Sony has today announced that they sold through 6.2 million PlayStation 4 units
throughout the 2016 holiday season. The PS4 has now sold 53.4 million units worldwide, an impressive amount. In the same period last year, Sony sold 5.7 million PlayStation 4s.

Further to this, they also announced that they sold 50.4 PS4 games in the same period worldwide in retail stores and through the PlayStation Store.

More impressively, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has now sold 8.7 million copies globally as of December 21st, 2016” ( in only 8 months from release )

And people think PS4 sales are slowing down, well proof in the pudding shows it’s selling better than last year☺ Well done Sony.

Yea, but where is your cut…lol Its doesn’t matter how many they sell. It won’t change their standing finacially.

It’s always nice when an underdog can get one up on a monopoly like Microsoft though don’t you agree?
It’s good for the industry overall too.

    • Mark

Yeah but Microsoft never had a monopoly over consoles. If anything Sony has been dominant since 1995. They’re the OGs, and know how to run a console business great

    • Riggybro

Xbox is Microsoft and Microsoft have a monopoly over the wooooooorld!

    • Mark

PC yes, but console, mobile phone and handhelds…not so lol

    • Mark

Yeah PS4 is selling nuts and will continue. Man I wanna see what XBOX 4 and PS5 looks like tho!

    • Gamez Rule

If, and I’ll say IF Scorpio does have a completely different CPU / GPU / RAM, etc than Xbone then really wouldn’t that be classified as a new next gen console?

    • Mark

To me nah. Yes next gen in hardware, but there’ll be no exclusives, that’s the biggy imo. Plus, 4-5 times more power than Xbox One isn’t huge, in terms of historical generational power jumps.

    • Gamez Rule

I still believe that MS are cutting this gen short with Scorpio, but time will tell I guess.

Remember what MS done with XBOX?… MS dumped that console and made Xbox 360 ( within 4 years of each others release ) *XBOX Nov-2001 – Xbox 360 Nov-2005* ( Is history repeating itself )? Look at the time of Xbone release and Scorpio release?

( we know what MS done with XBOX and Xbox 360 within 4 years of release ) but now look at the power jump from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and then from Xbox One to Project Scorpio? You’ll see it’s approximately four times more powerful each time?

Level of difference between Xbox 360 and Xbox One (0.3 TF vs 1.3 TF) Level of difference between Xbox One and Project Scorpio (1.3 TF vs 6 TF)

*Approx-time span from Xbox one to Project Scorpio = 4 years* ( Xbox One Nov- 2013 – Scorpio Nov-2017 )

It’s clear IMO that MS are just cutting this generation short like they did with XBOX by starting a new generation using Project Scorpio just like they did with the original XBOX with release the of Xbox 360 when Soy held the console market.

In My Opinion Sony’s next gen console PS5 will compete with Scorpio in late 2018, but we shall see.

    • Mark

Well ur more accurate than me, 360 to Xbox1 jump was about 5 times the power not 7 times like I said; 360 is 240Gflops or .24Tflops vs X1 1.3Tflops. So that’s 5.4, about 5 times the power. Good observation. However, here’s what’s wrong to me about ur theory. 1) There’s no exclusves on Scorpio. Why would they deny Scorpio the benefits of having games built ground up on it, that would blow away the competition? I could go into detail about exactly what I mean about graphics in this area but it really comes down to polygons, but anyway. 2) Last year Phil responded to an article on Twitter and said “We’re thinking about what the next Xbox will be, but we just don’t know what it is yet”. He pretty much had to silence peoples’ fears about this whole “no more Xbox generations”. So I doubt Sony will be alone next gen

“Why would they deny Scorpio the benefits of having games built ground up on it, that would blow away the competition”

To answer your question would be this. IMO every MS console has had the same console seller games like ( gears / halo / Forza ) but when XBOX got dropped and went to 360 MS stated that XBOX will get full support of currect games ( and for a while they did BUT soon dropped XBOX support on 360 ) so when MS say stuff I always take it with a pinch of salt.

But going back to how MS release consoles, and then comparing power differences between jumps, it does look like Scorpio is MS’s next gen console as it’s inline with past releases. And maybe they will release games for Scorpio to take advantage of power…. Time will tell I guess?

    • Mark

Gbolt blocked my dam post ugghh. Anyway polygons are the big difference in graphics, from one gen to the next. A game like Ryse has 80,000 polygons to make up Marius, it’d look atrocious on Xbox360 lol. So Scorpio won’t be pushing more polys than X1, just 4k and/or ultra settings.

    • Gamez Rule

But that still doesn’t mean it’s not MS’s next gen console.. It could just show that MS has no games to show off the power of their next gen console. Time will tell, BUT I really believe MS are leaving the Xbone behind and starting a new gen like they did with XBOX and the 360 while PS2 was outselling the XBOX

    • Mark

Well they said it won’t have exclusives, so if these games are on Xbox One as well, that makes it less appealing to get a Scorpio, because people can still play those same games…that’s big. I mean I can’t force u to adopt my view, I respect yours. I just see this as a mid gen refresh (comparable to the Pro), and that the next Xbox has already been hinted at. I’m still excited for this yr despite the bad news, there’s much for me to drool over for Xbox including Scorpio, State of Decay and Crackdown

    • Gamez Rule

Thing is MS have done something like I talked about above in the past ( XBOX and 360 when PS2 was outselling the XBOX ) and when looking at why 360 got released 4 years after the XBOX Scorpio could be history repeating itself ( Xbone and Scorpio as PS4 is outselling Xbone )

    • Mark

Well that’s one way to look at it. But the biggest difference is exclusives, and even the UI, controllers, and functionality’s gonna be the same as X1 on Scorpio. If this was a new gen thing, there would be obvious and striking differences to set the two apart, and judging from what’s known per Microsoft, they’ll be almost exactly the same. That’s the difference between the history u mention, and what’s goin on now. There just isn’t anything screaming “Next Gen” about Scorpio to consumers in light of the treatment new systems usually gets.

    • Gamez Rule

Well all I can say is this. Don’t be shocked IF Scorpio does become the next gen MS console and Xbone gets slowly phased out, ( although Xbone games will be supported on Scorpio ) as we know Scorpio is compatible with Xbone games, and by insider news about first party development situation looking bleak from MS for the xbone I would say even more could point to my theory.

    • Mark

Well even if they are starting a new gen, Phil already mentioned they’re thinking hard about what the next Xbox is….that’s enough for me to expect another Xbox within 5 yrs. So I just don’t see it bro. However u could be right, so we’ll just have to wait about 3 years to test ur theory lol. Anyway good chat mane

    • Mark

Check this out. It’s a small piece about polygons (that also helps in creating joints in the characters) and blend shapes, or a method that helps characters and objects look more believable. To me this is the stuff that greatly propels next gen graphics over last gen. Resolution and higher settings is good but not this type of good in terms of realism imo

      http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/02/20/the-order-1886-characters-have-over-100k-polygons-more-than-ryses-marius-but-less-blend-shapes/

    • Gamez Rule

But yet again not all games have boosted polygons on new gen games when compared to other current games from older console games as you know yourself.

Beyond Two Souls has models from 80.000 polygons as did Uncharted 2 which also used 80,000 Polygons in their characters. So really an extra 5000, is not impressive on a new gen console game

      See what I mean. http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/5942.html

    • Mark

U know what, good point. I remember Crytek doing a comparison with Marius havin 85k polys vs 150k, and the difference wasn’t that big honestly. I guess it’s just a combo of graphics algorythms that makes a game look good. But having Phil say “Scorpio will run 4K with same graphics as Xbox” says there’s won’t be developement involved where it’d be treated like next generation. More like higher res and settings, but no custom algorythms. Who knows with 3rd parties tho. Prolly not.

      What crap, lol.
