Project CARS Dev: PS4 Single Core Speed Slower Than High-End PC, Splitting Renderer Across Threads Challenging

Slightly Mad Studios talks about the challenges of developing for the PS4.

Project CARS (7)

In our on going coverage of Project CARS, GamingBolt recently had a chance to speak to Slightly Mad Studios, developer behind the stunning racer which was recently announced to be releasing on the PS4 and Xbox One in late 2014. A lot has changed for the studio since that announcement, with the visuals of the game being compared to the likes of Forza Motorsport 5 and Drive Club. Creative Director Andy Tudor has his own thoughts on what to do with all that power though, specifically with the PS4.

On being asked if there was a challenge in development due to different CPU threads and GPU compute units in the PS4, Tudor stated that, “It’s been challenging splitting the renderer further across threads in an even more fine-grained manner – even splitting already-small tasks into 2-3ms chunks. The single-core speed is quite slow compared to a high-end PC though so splitting across cores is essential.

“The bottlenecks are mainly in command list building – we now have this split-up of up to four cores in parallel. There are still some bottlenecks to work out with memory flushing to garlic, even after changing to LCUE, the memory copying is still significant.”

As for the console’s other features, such as the Share button, Tudor confirmed that the studio has plans for the same. “As you’ll have seen from our YouTube presence, the gameplay videos and trailers people have been making so far are getting millions of views so being able to share or stream your proudest moments direct from the game either via Twitch or Upload Studio are pretty engaging features.”

Project CARS will arrive for PC, SteamOS, Wii U, Xbox One and PS4 in Q3/Q4 2014.

Even a powerfull old phenom ii X4 beats the “next gen” tablet low power jaguar cpus.

    • Vulcanproject

8 Jaguar cores, or more like 6 usable for games are certainly no faster than a current Intel desktop dual core. Except to get even that performance you have to highly optimise code spread over lots of threads running parallel while trying not to pound your memory bandwidth too hard.

Nobody said this next gen game development was easy, just easier relative to PS3.

    • Lujo

Well, at least 7 cores are usable for games in PS4 :

      http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=94263004&postcount=1

    • Dakan45

and 5gb of ram for games.

    • Guy Brohski

The PS4 only has 4.5GB RAM for games. The Xbone however has 5GB allocated for games. Stop relying on N4Gay, and NeoFAG for all your info. Those are notorious Sony fanboy sites for n00bz.

    • Lujo
    • Guy Brohski

No it’s not, but nice try.

    • Lujo

Sorry, dude. It’s available 6 GB for games :

    • Dakan45

      Why you think that?

That site is trash and the info game from neogaf. Read the article not just the title.

    • Faisal Munayam

      4.5gb physical ram… 512mb swap file ps4

      5gb physical ram… xbone

      you must be special

    • Dakan45

“The PS4 only has 4.5GB RAM for games. The Xbone however has 5GB allocated for games.”

Diffirence between has and allocated is?

    • Guy Brohski

“Diffirence”…? And do I have to give you a language lesson on the definition of ‘allocated’, or can you grasp it?

    • Dakan45

Looking at the thumbs up i got think i am not the only one whod didnt get what you mean.

I also made a typo big freaking deal.

5 days later i dont care anymore anyway.

    • Faisal Munayam

      4.5gb physical ram… 512mb swap file ps4

      5gb physical ram… xbone

    • Silverwolf07

Wrong it’s 5 gigs of physical ram for the PS4 with 1 gig on standby and was said can be uped as long depending on game dev’s needs. Get your facts strate.

    • You are flat out wrong

lmao, that stuff never got confirmed. Jog on, Xdrone.

    • Guy Brohski

DERP it’s only been confirmed for 4 months now. Fail on, Drony pauper.

    • You are flat out wrong

You mean those Eurogamer rumours that never got corroborated? This must that deranged bubble Xdrones live in that lets them think that Ryse is good.

    • Guy Brohski

You are flat out dumb, bro. Sony and MS both confirmed their console’s memory allocation months ago, now go be dumb somewhere.

    • Vulcanproject

Possibly 7 cores but not definitely. The post theorises it based on a benchmark on the consoles. It suggests PS4′s CPU is faster than Xbone’s. If accurate this means it could either have another core available or part of a core or merely just be higher clocked.

It does make sense however that PS4 would potentially have greater CPU resources available to developers, merely because of Xbone’s more complex multitasking OS and kinect functions.

Be it all 8 cores @ 2ghz, 6 cores @ 1.6ghz or anything in between, The console CPUs are not really any faster than a modern Intel dual core. Interesting reply though.

    • Faisal Munayam

      it’s 6 actually… and only 4.5gb of ram to games…

    • Dakan45

Oh its easy compared to every other console that the developers had to learn the architecture each freaking time, now they atleast know the basics.

So far most pc games use only 3 cores, so there is not much of a comparison there either.

We will see how it goes i care more about 60 fps and large maps than graphics.

  • John

But, I thought PS4 has no Bottlenecks? NeoGaf lied to me.

    • davey

the latest builds for Driveclub on PS4 look pretty damn sweet (watch in HD):

      30fps because of CPU bottlenecks…..

    • You are flat out wrong

And yet it still looks better than Flopza 5.

    • op_gamer

yeah, who needs Project Cars, Driveclub looks awesome

    • bigshynepo

They have managed to capture the feeling of speed rather well I think.

    • Faisal Munayam

      30fps because of CPU bottlenecks..

    • Faisal Munayam

      30fps because of CPU bottlenecks..

    • Guy Brohski

Wow, they FINALLY implemented god-rays which were used in games for the last 13 years. Amazing, totally.

    • Dakan45

It has, not having DDR3 is a bottleneck alone, that doesnt change the fact sony is gonna praise it to high heaven nor that xbox one has a inferior gpu which brings down everything.

    • Nikola Kostic

I remember you haha. You kept saying how xbox 720p will perform better than ps4 cus of ddr3.. LOL even after the facts are in youre still playing the same tune

    • Dakan45

i said the problem of xbox one is its gpu not its cpu or ram, they used ESRAM that can read and write at the same time to overcome the bottlenecks of GDD5

I expained that 3 time but you kept on trolling like a sonytard.

ill say it again, the ram is NOT the problem, the weak gpu is.

      Get it troll?

    • M$ $ony

The GPU is not weak! Remember you have to take the special processors into account when measuring GPU performance and the Xbox One SoC is stacked and we don’t know what’s under it all!

    • Dakan45

Too bad ubisoft has never said anything about feature pc games being f2p due to pc piracy and the only reason they blamed piracy was because they couldnt find someone to port future soldier on pc so they tried to make everyone go to ghost recon online. As soon as they found a pc studio, the made a pc version. Talk about being unproffesional.

Pc is going down the drain you say?

How so pc has more exlusives than all consoles combined, more developers work on pc. Developers are making profit from pc gaming so they go and bring old console only titles to pc. Games like brutal legend, deadly premonition, viking, odyssey to the west, casltevania lords of shadows.

Why do they bring those games on pc? They have stopped making money on consoles years go they werent particulary sucessfull, ITS BECUASE PC IS MAKING MONEY THROUGH STEAM SALES and those games will continue to make sales for decades without the developers having to lift a finger.

Its not like skyrim has sold 4.5 million copies on pc….wait it has.

Sorry kid pc is the feature, consoles are lossing money because they spend 100 million to make a game that will get them around 3 million in sales. So they stop making horror and tactical games and dumb down every franchise to appeal to console idiots who cant play a game unless its scripted, they even go and hunt down used sales because they lose money.

Titanfall, destiny, division, driveclub, always online drm is coming to consoles next to you and lets not forget dead space 3, microtransactions on 60 bucks games and lets not forget indiestation 4 gathers all the indies and f2p games, weird i thought sony fantards were playing better games than indies and f2p games they bash pc for…NOPE sony reallize the innovation in AAA industry is dying and due to how expensive games are becoming, the 60 bucks games will lose alot of ground so they gonna make only milked franchises to avoid risks.

Also i dont know where you heard that developers hate esram because crytek and cdprojekt have said that its easier to program than GDRR5, also as it turns out ps4 does indeed have seperate drr3 ram for the cpu, so i was correct.

      Now cry me a river

    • Hacker For Hire

It must hurt that it’s now been discovered that the PS4 CPU is faster than the Xbox one – by about 20-30%. So not only is the GPU faster, the memory faster but also the CPU. Amazing what a weak a** system the Xbox one is turning out to be. Must be nice having that boat anchor kinect chockng it.

    • cozomel

Wait, what!? is was discovered that the PS4 cpu is faster than the X1′s 1.75ghz? can i get a link please, i have not heard this

    • joel
    • Dakan45

That is bullcrap, you reallize that right or you just read the title?

      Pathetic pauper.

    • Gibbs

      I think he’s referring to his :

      http://www.playstationing.com/ps4/ps4-cpu-more-powerful-than-xbox-one-cpu-according-to-benchmark/102

Take it with a grain of salt though, nothing in the article is official

    • matt

Yes and they have wiiu running at near max graphic fidelity from the best pc version at 720p native 30fps on 1 core and they have had no problems,so expect maybe even better results when they get further into development on wiiu…..sounds like ps4 isn’t as powerful in benchmarks as it is on paper ????

    • Dakan45

exactly its bullcrap at this point like da power of da cloud and ps4 using 7gb for games.

    • M$ $ony

The article is a load of junk! The Xbox One CPU is more powerful than the PS4′s by a bit.

    • Dakan45

dIscovered? No thats just a rumor, what is the cpu clock speed of ps4?

You dont know that, until you know that, then we talk.

Ps i am a pc master race not a xbot. So i dont give much of a damn.

    • cozomel

Im sorry kid, but all you do is make yourself look dumb. It must really hurt you to see the PS4 whipping X1′s behind

    • Dakan45

Took you a while to get here, but you managed it.

I dont know if you sonytards are damaged in the head so i am gonna say it again.

THE XBOX ONE PROLBEM IS ITS GPU, NOT THE RAM OR THE CPU.

      Thats the weak part.

Get it? or do i need to draw a freaking picture.

But i forgot GLORIOUS POWAA OF GDDR5 AND MAGIC PONY PUKE OF SONY LIES

    • M$ $ony

You are wrong bro. The Xbox One GPU is not weak, because of the special processors that take tasks the stacked GPUs would be doing and giving the system 100% efficiency.

    • Dakan45

I know for a fact that xbox one cpu is more powerfull, cant say i care though.

Steambox has more power than any of the 2 can hope to ever have.

    • Silverwolf07

You’re a XBot acting like a PC master race lol and PC gamers only aren’t the master race. Sorry gamers period are the master race if u own all 4 platforms like me muahahaha! And another thing I read a report that the CPU in the ps4 was more powerful than the Xbox one CPU and it was confirmed by an AMD worker. Can’t find the link cause it was a while back but it’s fact that PS4 beats the One in GPU power, Ram power and Slightly in CPU power but not by much. I love both consoles and Xbox one will put out amazing looking games in the future but I’m not gonna be a fanboy and blindly say Xbox one is equal or out performs ps4 in power cause it’s not. Dev’s has confirmed this. Now your words against their’s. And the amount of likes don’t mean jack shiz when its the truth.

Am surprised this is news (and that they only singled out the PS4). We’ve known that the CPU cores of the PS4 and XB1 were both slow compared with the likes of an i7, and have known for months. Am sure it’ll be challenging, but if they want Project Cars to run on more than a small sub-set of gaming PCs, they’ll need their renderer to be able to cope well with slower cores and multi-threading anyways, and they’ll definitely need to master rendering over multiple cores if they want to stay competitive going forward – multiple cores is the future even on PC (they’re just faster cores).

    • matt

Yes and a pre alpha tester for wiiu version said without opimizing the wiiu cpu is making i5 sweat

      http://thewiiu.com/topic/15287-project-cars-wii-u-features-particle-shadows-multi-threaded-shadowing/page-2

    • M$ $ony

The Xbox One’s CPU is faster and more powerful than what you think!

    • Axe99

Whether it’s clocked at 1.6, 1.75 or 3.0 GHz, the Jaguar cores are no match for an i7 or the latest AMD CPU (can’t remember what it’s called) – and the XB1′s CPU is made up of Jaguar cores ;).

    • M$ $ony

I totally agree with you lol! I was not trying to say the Xbox One’s CPU can out due a top of the line CPU, but the Xbox One’s CPU is 100% custom and it is based off of the jaguar cores..

    • Axe99

Aye – which was the point I was making – the headline notes that the PS4 cores can’t match a high-end CPU core, but odd that the Project CARS devs decided to only mention that, when the XB1 cores (while good) aren’t going to challenge an i7 core by any measure. It’s no biggy, and we don’t know how Gaming Bolt (which have been known for click-bait headlines in the past) phrased the question.

    • You are flat out wrong

Both console’s CPUs are garbage compared to what you can get in a high-end PC. Wind your neck in.

    • M$ $ony

I am well aware of that and I was not trying to say the Xbox One’s CPU can outdue an i7, but the Xbox One’s CPU is 100% custom and it is just based off of the jaguar cores.

  • Real
  • You are flat out wrong

Hardly news that the either console’s CPU (or GPU, for that matter) is weaker than what can be found in a high-end PC.

Then again I guess Xdrone chimps are desperate for anything they can qualify as good news. Poor guys.
